It’s worrying that the Government thought that was ever workable. Shows how out of touch they are with how things work.

This is the same government that think you can check things on the Irish border without checking them.
The same government that think Brexit is a good idea and that 52% is the will of the people.
This is not a clever government.

I meant the porn block thing, I thought the government had scraped it years ago.

I have to say though that Abbott's misplaced point-scoring is pretty much neither here nor there, it was a Tory proposal and the entire shambles is a Tory embarrassment.

I think a lot of MPs and members of the public still support this kind of thing, I wouldn't be surprised if the next PM didn't bring it back

Fewer members of the public would support it if MPs spent more time pointing out why these laws are harmful, rather than going along with them for easy points.

The right will never do that - they want to create fear and use it to implement authoritarian policies, it's fundamental to how they operate - but the left ought to.

But Abbott clearly thinks these these blocks are a good thing so you'd have to convince her first.

I'm sorry, I don't really understand what point you're trying to make. I'm aware from reading her tweet that Abbott either genuinely likes the idea or is willing to go along with it: that's why I'm annoyed. It's annoying that an MP who should (by their stated ideology and principles) realise this law is bad, instead advocates for it.

Obviously I personally can't convince MPs to adhere to consistent ideologies and advocate for them honestly and earnestly. If I could I would be able to solve bigger problems with our system than this particular law, I imagine.

I don't really want to go round in circles on this because I think the more important story than what a Labour MP thinks about it is how duplicitous the Tories are: how these laws (see also: voter ID) have no genuine moral conviction behind them but are created and dropped at a whim, based on what might slip past the public or receive surface-level support, to slide the law towards authoritarianism.

Comrade Karl, are we allowed porn in your post-capitalist utopia? How would the state provide it?

I guess that I believe that her views are consistent with this law. She's public stated that Mao was on balance good for China, his policies but a lot large controls on what the people of China could do, so she's at least to my knowledgeable ever really expressed any views to suggest that she's against authoritarianism as long as the state provides for its people.

 Sure, I can answer that.

In a communist utopia there actually isn't a state. People would simply help provide for the community based on their personal interests. So I assume anyone who enjoys making porn would continue to do so and upload it.

In a market socialist society (which is probably the compromise we would have immediately after abolishing capitalism) you are still allowed to buy and sell things, you just aren't allowed to exploit workers by being the boss of a business. I would imagine porn "companies" would continue to function but as worker cooperatives.

Fair, I didn't know she's properly auth-left. I know the membership leans lib-left but obviously the parliamentary party is all over the place. Fwiw I wish there were proportional representation so we could have smaller parties with more consistent views. Broad church parties don't really work imo.

But the hierarchical nature of society is what drives so much of the porno content currently out there - boss/secretary, college teacher/student etc.

This new utopia will destroy the bedrock of smut storylines!

I suspect communist porn is very popular, especially when Worker and Parasite are involved.

You'll still have "I've come to fix your fridge/weed the garden" storylines.
