I doubt many people have spent thousands on a 4K TV, they are available for below £1k now.

When faced with the option of something like Netflix for £8 a month or £25 for each individual movie, I can totally understand why people are streaming.

My gripe isn't with those people. Many consumers have gone for either lower or mid-range TVs that suit their needs and budget which is fine. They want an improved quality of image but spending over £1000 either isn't how they want to spend their money or outside of their price range.

It's the people that buy top of the range Sony TVs and then just watch Netflix on them that I don't get. They've clearly got the money if they can afford to spend £3000+ on a TV but what's the point in spending £3000 on a TV if you're just going to steam Netflix or Amazon on it.

More money than sense?

There will be a lot of content that isn't available on 4K blu-rays, do the people with £3000 TVs not buy any 4K discs?

Only 4k Blu-rays I own are Blue Planet 2 and Planet Earth 2.

Though my TV is I think a low price range tv, but all the reviews I read before buying it were very positive. It's an LG55somethingsomething. Even has HDR and that Dolby thing.

Considering the number of people I see with expensive TVs and no Blu-rays my perception is that the sale of 4KBD and even HDBD isn't in line with the number of people that own these pricier TV sets. I've got the grand total of strawberry float all stats to back up my perception though.

I buy a mixture. 4K is currently too expensive for me for all new purchases as I don't think it's worth the extra £10 per movie and if buying 4 movies costs you £100 that's ridiculous. I do buy certain movies on 4K if they're especially focused on imagery and I feel it'll benefit from HDR. I also only buy 4K that's actually rendered / filmed in 4k and not just a 2k upscaling.

It's similar to the chicken-egg scenario when Blu-ray launched back in 2006, there wasn't much content, so people didn't buy the players. It was down to PS3 which came with a player built into every unit to get it off the ground (similar to PS2 and DVD).

I collect videos so that I have physical copies of my favourite movies (I've never bought a DVD or Blu-ray of a movie I hadn't previously seen) and, thankfully, most of these are now being released in 4K with brilliant remasters and transfers (Die Hard, BladeRunner and ET being good examples).

I'll be waiting for PS5 before starting my collection, but hopefully having compatibility with Xbox One S/X is helping to drive sales.

I buy 4K discs quite regularly now since getting an Xbox One X (about 4 a month) but once I've watched them I stick 'em on eBay, so on average it's only costing me a few quid, though occasionally I'll get all my money back.

Would I have bought an Xbox had Sony had 4K content available on the PlayStation store or through the TV though? Probably not. And comparatively, the Xbox was a far better value proposition than purchasing AppleTV.

Ultraviolet has announced they’re closing on 31st July 2019. Any movie codes not redeemed by that point will be void via UV. All movies beyond that date that have already been redeemed will also be lost unless paired with a first party content provider. So worth heading to their website and following all the instructions should you wish to retain/use your digital copies.

I've never redeemed a UV code and I have at least 150 blurays.

I could never seem to get UV codes to work (Or any of these digital redemption codes really)
Either you got a message that the code had expired, or that it was the wrong region or something like that.
Then when you could get the codes to work you couldn't play back on Android devices which would probably be what I would've wanted to use with them anyway so the whole thing seemed pretty pointless.

I'd like Amazon to do what they do with CD's and give you a digital copy of films you buy disc copies of.

You tried linking your UV account with Flixster and redeeming via the app? That's where my UV library is and still works. Disney need to get their arse in gear with releasing the movies anywhere app over here. Baffling why they haven't yet.

No, might have to give that a try.
That allows mobile playback on Android?

Most Blu-Ray's come with a digital copy version as well. I agree it would be simpler if it was all just done through Amazon though. I never bother redeeming my codes; just rip the Blu-Rays and store them on my NAS instead.

I'd rip all my Blurays if it didn't take as long but I've got so many that I'd be at it for days.

The ripping itself isn't too bad for me. If I want to convert it I'd have to employ someone fulltime and it would still take 6 months.
