Ultra HD Blu-ray (marketed as 4K Ultra HD on store shelves) is a digital optical disc data storage format that supersedes Blu-ray. Ultra HD Blu-ray discs are incompatible with existing standard Blu-ray players. Ultra HD Blu-ray supports 4K UHD (3840 × 2160 resolution) video at frame rates up to 60 frames per second, encoded using High Efficiency Video Coding. The discs support both high dynamic range by increasing the color depth to 10-bit per color and a greater color gamut than supported by conventional Blu-ray video by using the Rec. 2020 color space.

Should have called it Bluer-Ray.

It's going to cause so much confusion, it's inevitable that some people will buy these discs expecting them to play on Blu-ray players. A better naming system would have been...

DVD > HD-DVD > Ultra HD-DVD (thanks Toshiba)

Personally, while I may never feel the need to buy a TV big enough to warrant 4K, the prospect of physically owning my favourite classics in their original resolution is very appealing.

Last Blu Ray I bought was James Bond Skyfall. Can't see myself ever buying a physical disc again for music or TV.

This is going to be such a niche product, and will probably only be used - if at all - by the next PlayStation and Xbox. Apart from my Uncle, I know nobody with a stand-alone Blu Ray player. I mean a lot of PCs and of course Mac's never moved on from DVD...in fact many manufacturers just dumped a disc drive completely.

I've not bought a DVD or BlueRay in years. I hate physical media so it is all pointless to me. I doubt I don't download in 1080 as dont have the storage on my server for it so wont be moving to 4k. Unless I get loads of money and can convert my outside shed into a server room to house storage servers.

If this is the push that means films will begin to be more regularly available as 4k on streaming services then I'm happy. Despite 4k TVs being around for a little while content is really lacking, maybe this is what studios have been waiting for: a universal home media format to set a standard that they can follow.

Unless they improve streaming compression (Netflix certainly isn't up to scratch) then I think there will always be a need for physical media for those who want the best quality.

Can't see myself going to 4K for ages. I expect this to only happen when our current TVs die and 4k is the norm. By which point 8K TVs will be out...

They're going to have to start bringing out some 32 and 37 inch 4K TVs first. I think the smallest, at least from Sony, is 43...which is obviously still too big for this new generation living in their cardboard box sized £500,000 apartments in London.

Always is a long time.

I think most people will be happy with the current quality of Blu-ray (indeed a lot of people are perfectly happy with DVD/streaming!). This ultra HD Blu-ray will be quite niche and I don't see it having much mass market appeal.

Streaming image quality is only going to get better and broadbands speeds are going to increase. Most people are going to be happy to wait for that.

LG and Samsung already do 40" models. I think most homes can take these.

In that case my next TV will be 4K

My current requirements are:

40" size
4K
OLED
HDR
Android TV

I'm willing to wait until I can get a TV with all the above for a reasonable price.

Hopefully this is the death knell for DVD, the format's been around since 1995.

I expect it has a fair few more years in it yet. I have Bluray and streaming at home but I've still bought cheap DVDs this year.

I expect that there are also a large number of people with DVD players, an HD TV and no Bluray. A lot of people with HD TVs have them because that was what was available at time of purchase, not because they particularly wanted HD.

This question makes no sense.

If you're asking whether the players will have a Netflix app then of course some of them will.
