Unawakening

What is this?

Orange RKN has made a game that acts as a companion to the legendary The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening. I believe that Orange has been working on this since 2018 and it has now reached a state where it works really well.

Now, OR is far too modest a chap to plug the game here with its own thread... and that's where an excited buffoon like me comes in handy. It was hidden away in the Hobbyist Game Development thread but I hope that Orange won't mind that I feel it needs more light on it; it's great and it'd be ace to see more folk check it out. I have not played the original Awakening but I still appreciated the characters and scenes.

How can I play it?

The game can be played in a standard web browser; use WASD for movement and J to interact. Click here to play! You can also click on the "+" and "-" buttons to make the game screen bigger or smaller.

Why not give it a go? There is more to it then you may imagine!

I made most of the tileset back in late 2018 but it was August last year when I started actually making a game from it. A bunch of people here in the grdev thread helped out a lot with playtesting (which was great for motivation!) until I had something resembling a finished game in mid-September. I then didn't touch it again until last week when I decided to finish off the parts I had left unfinished, which brings us to now!

Ah! I just posted in the game dev thread; it's not something I looked at too closely in the past but, having played this game, I'm keen to pay more attention to it.

Would you consider making more games like this, Orange? It feels like there is potential to make more cool stuff using this engine.

I've never tested this so I'm glad it works fine! I definitely want to try and explicitly consider accessibility more in any future projects. At least the design of this as a dialogue based trading quest means it isn't gated by reaction times or input dexterity, but that's more a happy accident than deliberate design choice!

It needs some tidying up but the basis is definitely there that I can hopefully expand on, I absolutely approached this as a learning experience and think I have got a lot from it. I have a few different ideas for what I'd like to do next when I have the time!

This is one of the reasons I enjoyed it. I like games where I can explore and check characters out; not face difficult battles or timed exercises. It made for a refreshing change!

Some of us were into this before it was cool. :roll:

But yeah it's still awesome and the latest update is another excellent development, well done RKN! :toot:
