It is actually quite hard to comprehend how impressive this really is.

Just downloaded the video and watched it in 4K on my TV. Never has the term Unreal Engine felt more apt. Amazing stuff.

The main thing I took away from that is most games will look like the best games this current gen can produce, only it will hopefully be a bit less arduous to do so?

And triangles.

My god, that was genuinely breathtaking! From within the first ten seconds seeing the rock scenery look so lifelike because of the movie quality assets, and the naturalistic camera movements that it actually did look real. It made me pine for an Uncharted made with this.

Don’t let the relatively basic character model and game tropes bother you as this was not a game demo but a tech demo. The question is can this quality be delivered in game? Epic said it was running on PS5 so we have to wait and see but I'm using triple-A (but cross-gen) AC Valhalla to temper my expectations because the gulf between them is massive. The next-gen with its piecemeal reveals has yet to make a compelling case on why people should upgrade, but this has got me genuinely excited.

You watched a 1440p 30fps tech demo in 4K? ;)

The luminous stuff looks amazing. Probable be 2022 by time we see any games using it though.

The fact that most of Microsoft’s Studios use Unreal Engine I would expect to see them push this engine in different ways.

Exciting times

Would like to see what it looks like on console at 60fps and with all the processes of an actual game running (AI etc.)

The native resolution being used is indeed 1440p which is then reconstructed up to 4K using unreal engines pretty impressive temporal upscaling seen in games like gears 5 on X or PC. This is much more than simple upscaling and has more in common with checkerboard rendering in terms of its final image quality.

In other words you can absolutely benefit from a 4K feed to see the extra details over a 1080/1440p video feed.

I think this Demo finally finishes the debate about whether or not games will look better on next gen.
The lack of pop-in alone will make a huge difference and the overall level of detail is pretty amazing.

Well they weren't going to look worse.

Fair enough but I think some people were unsure if the new gen was going to see any real advance and I think we have.
Obviously we've only got this short video to go on at the mo but so far so good.

That looks bloody amazing. When it was just the rock and cliffs I though yeah thats really realistic and impressive but then when the lights hit the statues and she looks out over that amazing vista then takes flight.
Jesus.

This happens every generation now and perhaps is due to the belief that high end PC graphics hardware of the day, eg. a 2080ti, running games designed for current gen at ultra high settings or with some extra effects defines the next gen graphical fidelity benchmark. More realistically they define what next gen cross gen ports could look like when very little effort is made. You won’t see what its graphical power is truly capable of (2080ti) until a game is developed to push the hardware in ways other than dialling every setting up. That’s where next gen consoles come in, massively raising the target spec. The days of a crysis on PC seem to be long gone unfortunately.

I guess it’s never a bad thing to have low expectations and be pleasantly surprised. There will always be launch window and cross-gen games that underwhelm as with any gen, but I’m very confident it will be a very noticeable jump this time, bigger than last due to a number or reasons.

The vast majority of Xbox Studios are using Unreal.

We've experienced Epic's stunning Unreal Engine 5 demo running on PlayStation 5 and we've offered up our first impressions of the new technology. In this follow-up video, Alex Battaglia goes deeper, examining how the key Nanite and Lumen technology work, our understandings improved thanks to assistance from the graphics engineers and architects who helped to create the new engine.

Inside Unreal Engine 5: how Epic delivers its generational leap

A closer look at the new Nanite and Lumen technology.

I do wonder how much of the PS5's supposedly special SSD is being used here compared to what can be achieved on Xbox Series X and PC.

Digital Foundry's tests over which game has the best 4K resolution may become redundant with Unreal Engine 5. Richard Leadbetter and Alex Battaglia say the graphics defy traditional pixel counting techniques.

Alex Battaglia from Digital Foundry wrote:Watching the online reaction to the tech trailer has thrown up some interesting questions but some baffling responses too. The fixation on the main character squeezing through a crevice was particularly puzzling but to make things clear, this is obviously a creative decision, not a means to slow down the character to load in more data - it really is that simple. Meanwhile, the dynamic resolution with a modal 1440p pixel count has also drawn some negative reaction. We have access to 20 uncompressed grabs from the trailer: they defy traditional pixel counting techniques. When the overall presentation looks this good, this detailed, with solid temporal stability (ie, no flicker or shimmer frame to frame), resolution becomes less important - the continuation of a trend we've seen since the arrival of the mid-generation console refreshes. As we said almost two years ago now, next-gen shouldn't be about 'true 4K', the game has moved on and put it frankly - GPU resources are better spent elsewhere.

Richard Leadbetter from Digital Foundry wrote:We've spent a long time poring over a range of 3840x2160 uncompressed PNG screenshots supplied by the firm. They defy pixel-counting, with resolution as a metric pretty much as meaningless as it is for, say, a Blu-ray movie. But temporal accumulation does so much more for UE5 than just anti-aliasing or image reconstruction - it underpins the Lumen GI system.
