Digital Foundry's tests over which game has the best 4K resolution may become redundant with Unreal Engine 5. Richard Leadbetter and Alex Battaglia say the graphics defy traditional pixel counting techniques.

Alex Battaglia from Digital Foundry wrote:Watching the online reaction to the tech trailer has thrown up some interesting questions but some baffling responses too. The fixation on the main character squeezing through a crevice was particularly puzzling but to make things clear, this is obviously a creative decision, not a means to slow down the character to load in more data - it really is that simple. Meanwhile, the dynamic resolution with a modal 1440p pixel count has also drawn some negative reaction. We have access to 20 uncompressed grabs from the trailer: they defy traditional pixel counting techniques. When the overall presentation looks this good, this detailed, with solid temporal stability (ie, no flicker or shimmer frame to frame), resolution becomes less important - the continuation of a trend we've seen since the arrival of the mid-generation console refreshes. As we said almost two years ago now, next-gen shouldn't be about 'true 4K', the game has moved on and put it frankly - GPU resources are better spent elsewhere.

Richard Leadbetter from Digital Foundry wrote:We've spent a long time poring over a range of 3840x2160 uncompressed PNG screenshots supplied by the firm. They defy pixel-counting, with resolution as a metric pretty much as meaningless as it is for, say, a Blu-ray movie. But temporal accumulation does so much more for UE5 than just anti-aliasing or image reconstruction - it underpins the Lumen GI system.

Gosh, Windows Central Gaming won't be having any of that

It'll be funny if after all the fuss re RT everyone just uses Lumen's bounce lighting/similar.

My main thought when watching that trailer was how loud the PS5 fan is going to sound trying to keep up with all that technical wizardry. My PS4 tries to tear the fabric of space just playing TLoU Remastered.

Off topic but I have a PS4 pro early model which wasn't always loud but certain scenes from certain games would make the fan unbearably loud. With the extra time available these days I finally decided to try replacing the thermal paste. Used Kryonaut and it worked a miracle. Night and day difference in fan noise.

The pro in particular and probably also original PS4 models have really bad applications of thermal paste, nearly half the chip looked like it hadn't even been coated, and searching for guides and videos to help walk me through it shows it's not an uncommon problem.

Anyway worth doing if you have the time and patience, I followed a guide and there was nothing particularly tricky provided you have the correct tools (T8 if I remember correctly). Took me about 1 hour working very slow and deliberately.

Thankfully Sony seem aware people find this annoying since Cerny mentioned it himself in the PS5 tech reveal, and said he think's we'll be happy with their PS5 solution, will be pretty embarrassing for them if after mentioning that there is still a fan noise problem.

The other day I learned that even the XOX has this issue, to a a much lesser degree out of the box, but eventually it too becomes noticeably audible:

Compared to my launch PS4 that was still whisper quiet :slol: (Turns out enhanced RDR2 still pushes the system noticeably hard :o That game )

Some info from China -

Epic China engineers’ interview, if you know Chinese you can confirm it by yourself.

https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV1kK411W7fK

53:00, he said his notebook could run at 1440p 40fps+, optimization target is 60fps for next-gen.
2:08:00, SSD bandwidth (for the flying part) isn’t as that high as ppl said, not need a stricted spec SSD (decent SSD is ok).
Someone at TGFCer forum said, the engineer just confirmed to him: RTX 2080 GPU notebook but forgot the exact SSD model, maybe 970 EVO Plus. (http://club.tgfcer.com/thread-8307013-7-1.html 94th post)

https://www.reddit.com/r/XboxSeriesX/co ... _notebook/

Alex from DF says -

Notebook RTX 2080 performs like a Desktop 2070Super. It running at 1440p at 40 fps is actually higher res than PS5 Demo if DRS targetting 30 would be used.

Well this is some interesting scaling and in fact lines up

https://www.resetera.com/threads/tim-sw ... t-34170498

Good to hear the target is 60fps

For me this reveal feels more like what I would expect from a next gen console reveal, in terms of raising expectations. I remember when I was younger and Nintendo released a load of moon-shot videos when they announced the GameCube (that Zelda video reveal!). To me Sony and Microsoft haven't done anything to make me feel the next round of consoles are 'next gen', more like a modest PC upgrade, yet this video gives me some of that feeling again.

Could also be I just don't pay enough attention these days.

It would be pretty odd if developers were already making max use of the hardware.
The current gen stuff being made now is way better than what was available in the first year and I expect the same for PS5 and Series X.

I'd agree, this is the first hint of 'next gen' I feel I've seen from either console or company, things previously as you've mentioned just seemed like an 'upgrade'. I'm looking forward to the releases now over Summer as a result. My console has changed from being used solely for gaming to pretty much replacing a set top box/DVD/Bluray player for my household. So to justify a new one, this is the type of reveals that make me think that :toot:

Nothing is shown: NEXT GEN IS SHITE.

A tech demo is shown: :toot: :toot: :toot:

I'm sure UE5 and all its cool tech will scale really well on various devices, but this made me laugh...

Game dev with engine building experience explains UE5 demo but without the techspeak.

To stop people being potentially mislead by the misuse of the word decent, the 970 evo plus is the fasted/joint fastest SSD you can use for a PCIe 3.0 system.

I would think so.
I know nothing about game development but are teams kept for a short while after launch to fix any major bugs that people find or is that all done by other people?
