Maybe they could annex Croatia and France today so we'd win the world cup by default.

They're clearly at the OTAN conference anyway. I think Trump is lost. Maybe he not only thinks but also sees backwards?

At best he's going to be in his final year as President so surely they wouldn't allow him to make such a momentous decision as leaving NATO especially if all the candidates oppose the idea? Sure the US can hope we spend more on defence but if they want basses in Europe they need to be in NATO and they have zero control over how much we spend of our own money.

Germany doesn't spend anywhere near 2% so expecting them to hit that target this year is insane and I highly doubt it could be done even if the Germans wanted to as it would mean cuts to other departments or borrowing, both of which can't just be done on a whim and take months if not years of planning as the Germans aren't known for just doing things without consideration.

Trump clearly has even less idea about how global politics works than I thought and I thought he was pretty clueless but I'd thought he would at least have advisors who could tell him his idea is strawberry floating stupid.

Awesome we can have a new club of the World's mightiest military spending powers, the USA, Greece, Estonia, The UK and Latvia.

I wonder legally what it takes for the US to leave NATO, can the President just take them out or would it be something that Congress and the Senate would have to vote on. If so I would be very surprised if Trump was supported.

I don't think Europe has much choice but to go ahead and raise spending, NATO needs to survive his presidency.

We can call his bluff and watch as he gets crushed on the issue by people pointing out the many, many flaws in his idea or we could just make a counter demand that "OK, we'll spend 4% on defence but we want you to spend twice as much on schools just because!" and see how they like it.

It doesn't matter if he gets crushed by facts, he always declares victory or pulls some crazy gooseberry fool out of his ass. He would very likely try to leave NATO if push came to shove.

It really does seem like the US has become a police state where people can get arrested for anything.

The land of the free idea is beyond a joke now.
