You'd think so but I think you're underestimating just how batshit crazy the US right are.
They've decided that what they want to do is defend obviously racist stuff and get really angry when anyone has a problem with this and unfortunately they're being backed-up by Fox news so they have a lovely circle jerk of stupidity. They have presenters like Judge Jeanine Pirro who spends her entire life lecturing her audience and at defcon 1 at all times (seriously, she's always strawberry floating fuming) about the terrible liberals who want to ban the flags they love.

Even if something is put on by mistake and is taken down they'll claim that they're somehow being persecuted.

The only good thing is that Trump is nowhere near competent enough to become a dictator.

The bad news is that any wannabe dictators in America will be able to look at Trump and realise that if they copy his populist methods, then half the country would cheer them into power.

The fact that Trump's supporters can claim with a straight face that he doesn't lie and that any evidence he does is all a media scam just shows how far the country has sunk into tribalism.
I honestly think Trump could claim puppies are somehow part of a giant liberal plot to spy on conservatives and they'd all go "Yeah, that sounds like something those bloody socialists would do!" and thank him for pointing out this huge security threat.
We all know puppies are part of the plot to lower the testosterone in men so they've already got a job.

One of the only true things Trump has ever said was when he claimed that he could shoot somebody in the street and his poll numbers wouldn’t go down. He’s right, most of his supporters are so brainwashed that they would support anything he does.

It’ll be interesting to see what he does if he loses the next election or when he has to stand down in 2024. I am not silly enough to think he’ll be able to hold onto power, but I also don’t see him going quietly.

If he loses this upcoming election (which, amazingly, I can't see happening) he'll never concede. He'll drag it out for months claiming voter fraud or some criminal activity.

If he wins again, 2024 will be a hell of a test of constitutional strength. There's no way he won't try to dig in (he's already started suggesting it ffs :( )

I do think Trump will go a bit insane with the executive orders in his last months in power.
He'll try and shove loads of laws through protecting himself and trying to enrich himself in rather obvious and cynical ways that completely screw over his supporters who will indeed support him while they're being royally screwed.
He may try and stick around for a third term but I at least have confidence that that norm will survive.

Whoever's next is going to have a tough time restoring the country from the train wreck that Trump will leave though.

It’s too early to guess if he will win or lose next year as we don’t know who his opponent will be.

But I agree with your post. If he loses then he is going to be claiming that dead Mexican voters cost him the election, that the liberal elites stole the presidency etc etc. His supporters will lap it up. I don’t think it’ll be a civil war or anything like that, but it is going to cause a lot of trouble.

If he wins then 2024 will be fascinating but like you said it will really test the constitution. I can see him trying to get term limits extended/abolished. America and the world better hope that the Democrats are in full control of both Houses by that stage. :dread:

And even if he dies between now and the next election/end of his second term it isn’t going to solve the problem. The Alex Jones types will be claiming for decades to come that the Democrats murdered Trump.

The only hope of ever getting back to normal (as normal as America ever gets ;) ) is that Trump gets bored and walks away.

I doubt it, unless states get behind Trump.

There’s millions of strawberry floating idiots that will cause trouble for Trump, but they are strawberry floating idiots. I can’t see them managing a civil war.

The Deep South would revel in the opportunity to get its own back, and the red central states would be onboard too. Half the military rank and file seem to harbour Trumpist sympathies as well.

I'm confused - can you or can't you see Trump winning in 2020?

Personally, I'd love to think he'll struggle to even win the Republican nomination. But it's notoriously difficult to oust a sitting president, no matter how gooseberry fool they are at their job. Only three since World War II I think - Bush Sr., Carter and Ford.

Johnson was a one-termer as well but he didn't run for re-election.

If we've learnt anything in the last few years, it's that we are well and truly in the darkest timeline and anything can happen.

One man should not have this much power in this game. Luckily I'm not an ordinary man.

I think he is a dead cert to win in 2020 unfortunately. Dems seem to be in a bit of a mess at the top, and I don't think Trump has done anything to lose his core support. If anything he has probably bolstered it.
