It doesn't matter where the information comes from if Trump says it's false then his supporters and Fox News will agree it's false and just claim anyone who says otherwise is only doing so because they have Trump derangement syndrome.

Chicago police believe Empire actor Jussie Smollett may have paid two men to carry out last month's alleged assault, reports in the US say.

Two Nigerian brothers who had worked as extras on Empire told police that they were paid to take part in the 29 January attack, police sources said.

Smollett had said he was attacked by two white men.

His lawyers have strongly denied he played any role in the alleged homophobic and racist assault.

"Nothing is further from the truth and anyone claiming otherwise is lying," they said in a statement.

The statement said one of the brothers had worked as Smollett's personal trainer.

Ola and Abel Osundairo have both appeared as extras on Empire. In this Instagram post, Ola Osundairo (R) is seen alongside Empire creator Lee Daniels (C).

I wrote a post at the time as his story just sounded so ridiculous/horrible that it couldn't possibly be true. Deleted it because I didn't want to get into an argument about it.

It was the bit where they were shouting about MAGA that just sounded too much.

You're pretty much left with two crazy scenarios either way: he's an elaborate liar or he's being elaborately framed.

It's all very damaging to people who have faced genuine abuse though and their struggles in being believed.

If true, its a truly horrible thing for him to have done, if indeed it was a hoax. It seemed an odd proposition at the start that at 2am in freezing weather, there were guys walking around Chicago with Bleach and a noose looking for someone to attack. At this point I guess it's either a targeted attack specifically against him through some grudge or a much more sinister staged incident. Just truly bizarre.

I'll await further information. What has exasperated this mess was the uncritical comments and reports from the media and comments from politicians before any investigation is under way.

Hopefully it will end this culture of "listen and believe" and get back to more "listen but verify".

What a bizarre story. If he really was attacked - that's horrible. But if he wasn't and it was staged - that's also horrible. But the question should always be "cui bono?" Who benefits? What's to be gained from staging an attack? Doesn't make sense to me.

Saying that I expect Fox News and some conservatives to back him anyway and claim anyone who see's a problem with this is a snowflake while moaning about SNL making fun of Trump and saying it should be looked into.
