Nobody is saying literally every single person in America is a Trump supporter, just that the country as a unit elected him. Just like not every single person in Britain voted for Thatcher, Blair, or Brexit, but the country as a whole did.

I can see why it might be objectionable but I also think it's important to understand that a statement of "the USA somehow enjoys chaos and having an absolute lunatic in charge" or "the USA enjoys having crooks and lunatics in charge." isn't the same thing as saying "all US citizens are morons and want this to be happening".

I think you can make a general point about the USA without claiming every single citizen (or even a majority of citizens) is guilty of what you are claiming.

Didn't half the population not bother to vote.

Voter turnout was 61% apparently.

In the local EU elections here the turnout was a whopping 37% so the US did pretty well  .

Also the US has a simply dreadful track record for voter suppression and gerrymandering which makes many places really, really unfair.

I don't know where you're getting 61 from? I've got 55.67% which is higher than I thought it was but clearly a lot of people couldn't be bothered to vote.

I just took it from here: https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2 ... t-ballots/

https://transition.fec.gov/pubrec/fe201 ... ns2016.pdf

On page 5:

U.S. Census Bureau Voting Age Population (Current Population Survey for November 2016): 245,502,000
Percentage of Voting Age Population casting a vote for President: 55.67%

Also if you follow the link through to the source provided by your webpage it says 56%.

Exactly.

Saying “the USA likes having a lunatic in charge” is completely different to “American’s like having a lunatic in charge”.

I'm just making the point the Peter regularly says 'all americans' or 'all US citizens' all the time, I just think it's a bit lazy and doesn't need to be said really at all.

It'd be like me in the Brexit thread starting every thread with "British people obviously want a gooseberry fool economy" before actually posting my point. I'm not annoyed by it but the vitriolic hatred of the right and Trump from my American wife (who comes from a democratic state) make these blanket statements seem a bit off.

British people aren't all racist idiots is my point.

I think you can make a generalised statement without it being a blanket statement or pertaining to all Americans, but the one in question didn’t do a very good job. I must be honest, Peter is sometimes guilty of making generalised points about the United States that come off as sweeping statements and aren’t always backed up by fact.

Case in point - this last post about assuming that Americans like chaos, which openly adheres to the second part of your post and also makes an assumption no logical person can or should make. It can be very frustrating to read at times, and I find myself in the somewhat strange position of agreeing with Photek here.

I think it’s pretty clear that nobody here thinks all American’s are the same.

Saying “the US this” or “the US that” is obviously a general statement about the population as a whole.

I’m sure she is, but everybody loves the Metropolitan Amateur Golf Association.

Looks like Trump successfully wiped Epstein, and his connection thereto, from the news cycle.

Funnily enough the papers in the UK have been quite happily running the Epstein/Andrew links, including today.
