If Trump does win again I think we can safely assume the USA somehow enjoys chaos and having an absolute lunatic in charge.
The fact that they don't care that he's a huge banana split who's screwed people over for his entire life already shows that the US only cares about celebrity and money but I always assumed they would want someone somewhat competent as President but it seems I'm wrong.

What does surprise me is the people voting for him are exactly the type of people Trump has so effectively screwed over for 50 years.

Why?
If the US continues voting for someone who's clearly unstable surely pointing that fact out is just a statement of the obvious?
I'd be saying the same about the UK if we started all voting for Farage and made him Prime Minister.

To be fair, seeing as he lost the popular vote quite significantly, it's less than half the country that support the orange racist, at least.

Didn't half the population not bother to vote.

That's a fair statement and the stupid electoral college system they have where some votes are worth more than others is less than perfect and why he won.

That's why I said "If he wins again" as surely the people should go out and vote after seeing the clownshow of the Trump administration and he should lose. I just wish Republicans would remember who they are and Primary him as Trump is not a Republican and I don't think he actually gives a gooseberry fool about politics or America at all other than how it serves him personally.

Voter turnout was 61% apparently.

In the local EU elections here the turnout was a whopping 37% so the US did pretty well  .

Also the US has a simply dreadful track record for voter suppression and gerrymandering which makes many places really, really unfair.

I don't know where you're getting 61 from? I've got 55.67% which is higher than I thought it was but clearly a lot of people couldn't be bothered to vote.

As Tomous pointed out, he lost the popular vote by a significant margin. If you want to argue that the US electoral system needs reform then by all means do some research and come back with an argument about that, but it’s a separate issue.

Making a blanket statement about what we can “safely assume” in any given situation stifles debate, and risks causing offence to any Americans viewing the forum(or Photek, whose long term partner is American I believe). I’d also argue that making assumptions like that in general is a dangerous way to commentate on both politics and trends in popular opinion, as well as pigeon holing over 300 million people. I’d imagine we all assumed that Britain wouldn’t vote for Brexit or Trump wouldn’t have won the first election, for example, but it happened.

A quick google gave me around 58% from three different sources. It’s quite a difficult figure to track, weirdly.

One problem here.
US elections are run the same as UK elections and many times ballots are held specifically at times when many are at work and can't get time off or they reduce the number of polling stations so it's hard to get to vote because the lines are hours long.
I'm not claiming that's the reason for all the lack of votes just that it is a cause of some of it.

Nixon won 2 elections
Reagan won 2 elections
Bush Jr won 2 elections

If Trump wins 2 elections then it’s fair enough to say that the USA enjoys having crooks and lunatics in charge.

Nobody has said all American people are racist idiots.
