The impact of coronavirus on the over 65s probably makes a bit of a difference too. Maybe not a highly substantial difference but basically being told you're being sacrificed for the Dow ticker might make people second guess who they vote for.

The very old remember WW2 and the horror of war and the dangers of fascism.

The Boomers spent their childhoods watching war movies and dreaming of "glory".

That's more British than American though to be fair. The American Boomers did have Vietnam, but they also had decades of "reds under the bed!" bullshit to warp their minds. Their parents would remember the depression plus "Uncle Jo Stalin" helping them.

Would the 50-64 year old demographic not encompass generation X at this point as well? If Gen X begins around 1965, then a good third of the 50-64 vote is theirs. I get the feeling that the older Gen-X voters are likely to be even worse than the late-era boomers. :dread:

True.

I'm still confused that the 20 year old hippies we see in Woodstock footage are now in their 70s.

Oh absolutely, and even older in some cases. It really messes with my head to think that the youngest people born in the depression prior to World War II in the USA are coming in to their 80s as of next year.

On a kind of similar note I was amazed to find out a while back that my wife's dad served in Vietnam for a few months in the RAN. We even found his service records online to prove it. She's the youngest child of three, six years older than I am and born about a decade after the conflict ended. Was crazy to find that I have an actual (sort-of) familial link to the era I research and teach.

Could you imagine if this ended up being the result?

Depends on just how much voting is actively suppressed in the likes of Texas and Georgia I guess.

If that happens and is reflected in the Senate elections as well, the Democrats are going to have a golden opportunity to work tirelessly for two solid years to not only undo the Trump administration's gains, but make solid gains in the other direction.

They will need to do what McConnell is doing with the judiciary, with not only the judiciary, but also legislation in general, as well as with restaffing, refunding and repairing all the damaged governmental departments.

They would do well to aim to be the most workaholic administration in American history.

Looking forward to, instead, the Democrats holding both the House and Senate and once again completely dropping the ball as they did before.

The party is too large and too ideologically diverse.

As I said before, its members and supporters run the gamut from center right so-called "moderates" and "blue dog" Democrats, to socialists of every stripe on the true left. In any other country with superior political setups, the Democrats would be at least three, four, six parties.

I have to have hope, however, that so many failings of the US have been shown in stark relief these past few years, that the Democrats will for once be able to unite for a couple of years, for the good of the country and the world.

There's a lot of work to be done, in a lot of states. I think every new and incumbent Democrat will be able to bring something to their state, as a result.

This would be an excellent result for basically the entire world except Russia.

They'd still have a job on their hands fixing everything the Republicans have effectively destroyed. It will take years even if they can all get on the same page.

I think it's time to shut down the internet for the sake of humanity. For all the good it might do, it's also giving a voice to utter morons.

I'd just like to know how she has conversations with people about that stuff where they don't just get up and walk away.
She's obviously not going to change her mind no matter how persuasive an argument is against her views so why even try?

Unfortunately the election isn't tomorrow because Biden would have won in a landslide if so.

Hopefully it'll keep getting worse for Trump.

A few bad apples.

Three North Carolina police officers were fired from their jobs this week after investigators found incredibly racist, troubling conversations, and threats of violence accidentally recorded by the cops' own dashboard camera.

The dashboard camera in Officer Kevin Piner's patrol car captured more than 46 minutes of relevant footage from a two-hour recording, Wilmington Police Chief Donny Williams said Wednesday.
