Alabama lawmakers have passed a bill to outlaw abortion outright in the state, set to be the strictest such US law.

The state Senate approved the law by 25 votes to six, rejecting exemptions for cases of rape or incest.

It will now go to Republican Governor Kay Ivey. She has not said whether she will sign it, but she is seen as a strong opponent of abortion.

Activists hope it will challenge a landmark 1973 Supreme Court ruling that legalised abortion in the US.

Under the Alabama measure, provision of abortion at any stage in pregnancy would be a class A felony.

Doctors could face 10 years in prison for attempting to terminate a pregnancy and 99 years for actually carrying out the procedure.

A woman who has an abortion would not be held criminally liable.

The bill would allow abortion in cases where the mother's life is at serious risk.

Its text says more foetuses have been aborted than people killed in "Stalin's gulags, Cambodian killing fields".

Unsurprisingly they rejected the chance of abortion in cases of incest otherwise it would have caused a 60% drop in the birth rate in the state.

It's so bizarre and frightening to see a western country go so far backwards on what should be a core civil liberty.

We've been having this dumb debate on-and-off for thousands of years since it was first settled by the Greeks ("early foetuses are more like a plant than a person" - literally Aristotle) and then dredged up again by the Romans ("but the father owns that foetus, it's a violation of his property rights!!!" - Roman chuds and, deep down, every conservative in every era since).

It feels like we will never fully move past it. So depressing.

They know that the law will be challenged in the courts. That's why they're doing it - they want this to get to the Supreme Court, and lead to Roe bring overturned.

I struggle to understand that people could sit down, hold a discussion, and then decide that women who have been raped have to complete the pregnancy.

Can't really add anything else; it's just too awful.

They don't see women as humans, they see them as baby factories and maids without rights.

I kind of get it on a purely emotional level. I don’t want to use the “parents would understand” bullshit, but as a parent ( ) it is so exciting and wonderful when you find out that you are going to be a parent. We found out really early on (my wife was pissing on sticks almost every day ) both times she became pregnant and you absolutely consider it a baby from the start. When the first pregnancy turned out to be ectopic it was one of the worst days of my life and I still find myself wondering what that kid would have been like.

But having said that, I am rational enough to realise that a foetus is not a baby. I am empathetic enough to realise that just because we wanted to be parents doesn’t mean everybody does. And I am not a strawberry floating monster that thinks women should be forced to carry the child of their rapist – especially if that rapist was their own strawberry floating father or brother.

I guarantee one thing, if men could get pregnant then abortion would never have been a controversial subject and it certainly wouldn’t have ever been illegal.

Why do religious people love people so desperately, until they are actually born, at which point they make furious efforts against both their human rights and their humanity itself?
