Mainly because Biden is
known, and he's known in an uncontroversial way. He was a very visible part of a very popular administration. He's also suffered a fair bit of personal tragedy that will garner sympathy and make him seem more relatable.
And if that all sounds very shallow and superficial, hey - this is America.
Was Obama well known before becoming President?
Was Hilary Clinton?
Being well known isn’t always a good thing. Hilary was well known because of Bill who lots of Americans hated. Biden is well known because of Obama who lots of Americans hate.
It’s not always about who’s well known, it’s about who’s best equipped to beat the opponent and/or resonate with people.
Biden has a history of casual racism, has a history of being creepy with women, makes constant gaffes, is old as strawberry float and is hated by much of America. All those things also go for Trump, but Trump was appealing to voters who like those things, Biden will need people who don’t like those things.
