Trump basically decided to abandon the Kurdish who fought against ISIS in the region for the US as allies - now Turkey is moving in to take them out.

The Kurdish are a minority religious group without their own country who live in Turkey, Iran, Iraq and Syria. They've been involved in a load of wars in the area but haven't been successful in creating their own independent state.

It's all rather amazing watching Trump do whatever the strawberry float he likes and however shitty the decision his supporters back him even if it makes them look like idiots.

It's like a really shitty cult who just fail to see any wrongdoing by the Dear Leader but the cult leader is willing to throw them all under the bus at a moments notice if he thinks it'll benefit him personally. It's why I can't see him going to prison as yes he may resign in disgrace but he'll blame everything on anyone he can (that includes his wife and kids) and they'll end up in prison while Trump himself continues to like a luxury lifestyle with other peoples money and thinking he's the smartest guy to have ever lived.

I really have no idea where US politics goes from here as it honestly feels like things like manifesto's or being consistent on an issue matters any more.
Why bother going to the trouble of putting forward a thought out plan of action for the country that you then actually stick to when you can just make gooseberry fool up on the spot and just lie about what's happening and call all criticism "Fake news!".

The Republicans used to be a party that was above all a party of limited government spending and Trump has done the exact opposite and cut the tax of the rich so national debt has gone through the roof which at any other time would horrify them but now they don't give a gooseberry fool.

Turkey is committing genocide. Russia is assisting. Trump is the enabler.

Trump is a radical candidate. I feel he can only be countered by someone equally radical. Sanders would get my vote any day of the week out of the front runners. I think Warren has too much against her in terms of what Trump could exploit. Sanders seems much better at owning any gooseberry fool thrown his way and deflecting it back.

But for the US, I just feel another 4 years for Trump are inevitable unless this impeachment deal goes somewhere. There has to be something there, the way Trump has been tweeting recently seems much more defensive than the Russia allegation and the lack of a transcript over this Ukraine call is mightily suspicious to the point that I am certain he used money as a bargaining chip.

A businessman like Trump almost certainly would use cash in that way. To me it is almost inconceivable that he wouldn't have used money as leverage.

They all beat him comfortably, they just need to pick the one that would be the best president.

Sanders just had a heart attack
Biden is already gaffe-laden at this early stage, has Clinton-esque baggage, and is very middle of the road
Warren definitely isn't perfect but at least has some better policies (although she certainly isn't a socialist) with the added bonus of probably not dying in office

I know this matters to a lot of people, but I've never heard a convincing explanation why?

His brain is sharp and he's running the highest-energy campaign out of all of them imo. Getting a stent doesn't mean you're going to die soon, it's probably less serious than e.g. getting a new hip. He was off the trail for like, what, a few days tops?

Don't get me wrong, Warren isn't a disaster - certainly not by US standards - but she won't advocate for the kind of changes Sanders would even if he only lasted one term.

Because it means his body can't take the pace of the campaign he's running, and we're still a year out from election day. You can have the sharpest mind, but it won't mean gooseberry fool if your heart can't take it. Plus, IIRC, his daughter in law just died.

Warren is not all that dissimilar to Sanders, with comprehensive plans on all kinds of policy fronts that make her by far the most feared candidate on Wall St.

I feel like she is better qualified than Sanders, and could take on the corruption at the heart of American politics much more effectively.

Signs I'm watching too much TV/reading too many books?:

American woman with diplomatic immunity was made to leave the UK so Trump would have leverage when Boris came calling.

There's no way in hell Trump let everyone see those talking points accidentally.

Trump let Turkey into Syria so media would have something else to talk about other than his impeachment.

That last one I'm less sure on because the reaction from GoP put huge heat on him anyway.

@Alvin: I guess I just fundamentally disagree with you on both counts. There's no evidence Sanders is at death's door or about to go mad which are the only reasons I would care about his general health over his politics. I agree that Warren supports similar headline policies, but I think there is a very meaningful distinction to be drawn between democratic socialism and social democracy; Sanders is building a genuinely, uncompromising left movement, while being an establishment policy wonk makes Warren's anti-capitalist praxis worse, not better. Her progressive taxes would be less progressive, her debt forgiveness would reach fewer people, etc.

Don't get me wrong, I'd vote for Warren, obviously, she's fine - actually pretty good as it goes in the US - but I'd campaign for Sanders, you know? I think it'll be a long time before the US has another genuinely socialist candidate with a shot at the White House. Maybe AOC in 20 years or something.

Bernie was born before Japan attacked Pearl Harbour.

It’s not inaccurate to say he’s close to death’s door....

And yet he did nothing to stop it, traitor!

Trump would have wrestled those Japanese planes down to the ground with his bare baby hands and single-handedly prevented the attack like a true patriot!

You know what I meant! I guess I just don't think being old should disqualify you if you are smart and you have good policies. If you only last a few years, that's okay, it's what the vice president is for.

It works the other way too, having a set age limit of 35 is silly, as if a 30 year old couldn't be a good president.

I agree with what Karl has said. Bernie is the best candidate and Warren would be an okay compromise. Hopefully one of them will end up being the number 2 to the other.

Are you sure there’s an age limit of 35? Because I’m pretty sure they have a toddler in charge at the moment.

I agree with the general view that Bernie is the one I would most like to see actually win - it would be fascinating to see some of the changes he is advocating make their way into reality. But if it isn't going to be Sanders then Warren is probably the best of the rest.

They should have gone with Sanders last time round.
