Yeah the uni hoodie craze seems to have really kicked off over the last 10-15 years I would say.

School leavers hoodies seem to be a big thing now as well, you see lots of kids with "Leavers 19" and stuff on the back of their hoodies where the numbers are (I assume?) made up from the names of each of the kids in the school.

Don't think I've ever worn it

Recent uni leavers may do that but I see people in the US (on tv anyway) in late middle age still wearing them which just seems really odd.

They're big into their college allegiances in the US, it's a much bigger deal than it is over here.

The college you went to, which fraternity and societies you were a part of etc. It's all a bit part of their identity that they carry forward with them through life. You get people actively "looking out for" and supporting other people just because they went to the same college.

Public school allegiances are probably the closest thing we have in the UK. :dread:

I know the stuff you see on screen is not real but US school culture just seems toxic as strawberry float.
Nothing about it is in any way appealing and in fact is just a giant advert for just leaving the US and sending your kids to school in the middle of an active warzone where it's safer.

Really impressive stadiums and sporting facilities though. We either keep selling ours off, or building on top of them. My primary school used to have an enormous playing field, it was fantastic. So what do they do? Build more classrooms on it. And then go one better and double stack.

I regularly pass private schools and they all still have theirs. Usually see cricket, football or rugby played on them over the weekend. The opportunities and health benefits that brings to kids is huge. I think it was Sainsbury's in my day that also provided us with so much of our sporting equipment as well.

Southend Utd have cheerleaders at their home games. It's pretty crap though they're not a patch on their American counter part. I think marching bands are becoming more popular as well. At least most London council seem to dig one up for the New Years day parade.

Crystal Palace also have cheerleaders.

I like to think the reason cheerleading never took off in this country is because IT'S TOO strawberry floating COLD. So we just settled with women with big tits parading around in a green ribbon with Paddy Power written on it.

Also it's probably nigh on impossible to find that many attractive women within in the entire UK, let alone the same town.

Sports are a huge part of the attraction for American colleges - you support the sports team of your choice through their championship and form the same kind of bond with the team as a lot of UK sports fans do with their local club - I met folks in Austin more fanatical about UT basketball than I’ll ever be about Celtic. It extends to the national level as well - Rickie Fowler plays golf in huge tournaments on Sundays dressed in the colours of his alma mater. Richard Nixon used his power to call plays in college football and later the NFL(in a super bowl no less).

I’ve been to College Football matches in Texas and the entire community comes out for them - it’s brilliant. They had marching bands come on at half time and I thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. You can see how it takes hold of college towns.

I was given a massive plate of BBQ food and a six pack of Lone Star just for the team logo on my hat as well.

Luckily US beer is so weak otherwise you'd have been steaming after that!

Aren't the largest sports stadiums in the US for college teams rather than the big leagues? I'm sure there's one stadium in Chicago that dwarfs everything else, and it's for the college side.
