Trump says Suleimani strike was 'retaliation'

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office alongside the Greek prime minister, Trump claimed the US strike that killed Iranian general Qassem Suleimani was “retaliation.”

“He was a monster. And he’s no longer a monster. He’s dead,” Trump said, according to the White House pool report.

But senior US officials have previously said the strike was meant to prevent an “imminent” attack on Americans, although they have refused to provide further details on the threat.

Dems are being pathetic again and refusing to condemn the current course of events. Honestly, if you sampled the mealy platitudes coming out of their mouths and mixed with those vomited out in the lead up to Iraq you would be hard pressed to tell which is which. As usual, Sanders proves himself to be the only Democratic candidate with an actual working spine by opposing military escalation.

The Dems know that if this escalates to full war they're going to look bad in a lot of Americans eyes if they're seen to be against the war.

The Rally Round The Flag Effect is a very powerful one - it's what got Dubya re-elected.

There's Trump's justification for a military hissy fit.

This is not going to end well. Hopefully nobody else gets involved although I'm sure Boris will throw his full weight behind Trump.

Is Tehran still there? What's going on? I'm assuming Trump's nuking everyone.

A Ukrainian plane has crashed in Iran, with 180 people on board, according to local media.

Iranian state media are saying it was a technical fault. We should probably wait for more confirmation.

Being selfish here but if this strawberry floats up my holiday to Disney world in two weeks Trump's rage will be nothing.

The Ukrainian plane crash has to be some weird coincidence surely. Can't see much logical sense in anyone targeting it other than russian backed Ukrainian rebels.

Apparently no one died from the missile strikes last night. Was that the plan or is America that good at defence / Iran just suck at missiles?

Could Iran be goading America into being the side who declares war? Or are they just testing to see how far they can push Trump? The BBC noted that the time of the attacks would have ensured minimal casualties so it must have been a conscious decision on their part?

Iran don't want open war with the US (as literally no country wants), but they are both pressured into response by their posturing and will use US aggression to their advantage (in reducing US influence and involvement in the region) if they can

America hasn’t declared war since WW2, so they have little hope of that happening.

I think this plane crash is tragic and I really hope it's nothing to do with tensions, it was mostly Iranians who died on the flight as well (Iranians and Iranian Canadians).

Iran responded in the safest way possible and aimed to not even kill anyone, where as America deliberately targeted a general for no reason. America are strawberry floating gooseberry fool.

I am not sure firing missiles is the safest possible way of retaliation. ;)

I mean, they missiled at a time they knew the base would be practically empty. America has done this before with Iranian airfields.

A "proportional response", something Trump has no strawberry floating clue how to say let alone comprehend!

Oh well, when this all kicks off at least we might be able to get a new Desert Strike out of it.

Well, not exactly. They had (correct) intelligence of the location of a wanted target that was behind multiple attacks on coalition forces, and they went for it.

It's not like they just looked him up on Wikipedia and sent a drone to his house.
