I'll obviously concede to Cora's knowledge though!

I don't think there is much overlap between the Democrats' interests and their voters' interests tbf

I think it could be argued that the Democrats have been much less effective at delivering for their voters since the Civil Rights era than the Republicans have for conservative voters. To the point that the typical Democrat voter now has much less influence on who runs the country and what happens in it than the typical Republican voter.

Republicans have been openly saying they're coming for Roe v Wade for decades and still the Democrats are caught by surprise and held up by their own supposed members.

To answer the bolded part, there's no question that dirty politics was a thing during the 1960s and 70s. The problem was that both parties were involved in it, so neither could grass the other up publicly! Nixon cops an awful lot of abuse for keeping meticulous recordings of his time in office, but nobody really bats an eyelid that his predecessor did exactly the same thing!

I'm not a fan of TYT at all these days but Anna Kasparian's outbursts about this have been excellent, she encapsulates the futility and anger most American's feel. She's also pretty hot tbh....

Good, we wouldn't want to risk a judge sustaining a nasty chalk injury.

It always surprises me when you see US right wing talking heads complaining that they are sending another $40bn to Ukraine when people back home can't afford to feed their kids.

As if the American right would ever believe that money should be spent on welfare for the poorest in their own country!

Exactly the same happens here.

Anytime we send aid somewhere you get the usual suspects shouting "how about we help people in our own country first!" before repeatedly voting Tory

Honestly I feel that it would be good for the world if it did.

What special copyright protections does Disney have?

I mean the Republicans are taking away these things for the wrong reason but they really shouldn't have them.

Basically they keep extending copyright limits so Mickey Mouse and co don't go into public ownership. I don't believe they are specific to Disney but they are the driving force in bribing lobbying politicians to extend copyright term limits. Obviously a lot of their characters (and Marvel too) are pretty old now and would no longer be copyrighted if they didn't keep getting the term length increased.

None specific to Disney. The special copyright apples to all companies, it basically keeps their stuff out of public domain for longer than it would have at the time of the IP creation.

Republicans are so angry at Disney that they are proposing allowing anything 56 years old to enter public domain.

Same as with Mickey, if they put 56 limits in Spider-man (created in 1962) would go into public ownership.

There's no specific issue with Spider-Man in terms of this kind of copyright *yet* - the limit is 90 years and Spider-Man is just over 60. The copyright problems with him are that Marvel sold his movie rights to Sony in the 1990s without putting any provisos in for taking him back if they made it big in the film industry, so now trying to get permission to use their own character in a movie is a giant clusterfuck.

The only character who is starting to look a bit ropey on the copyright front is probably Captain America, who is 81 and will enter the public domain in about ten years without extended copyright protections.

The 56 year limit thing won't get near going through, I don't think. Disney won't be the only company who receive a shafting off the back of it.
