i must defend religion (lol) as a teacher of it; there is nothing in the Bible that gives men in the US the right to legislate over women's choices. while i do not deny that it is a strong motivation, these people are not Christians in any sense of the word. the clearest mention of anything resembling abortion in the Bible specifically states that the unborn child is property of the woman. the use of religion to hide the desire to control women is disgusting

To the woman he said, “I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth children. Your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you.”

It's pretty difficult to separate that ideology and those values from the end point though, surely? If the Bible teaches that women are effectively property of their husbands or of men, then men dictating whether or not they can have an abortion is a pretty logical place to end up.

yes that is a good point - the problem with the Bible or any large religious text is it can be cherry-picked to fit whatever view you're taking. for example if i wanted to say that a woman can have as much choice is a man i could quote:

There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.
‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’
Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.
“So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.
Unequal weights and unequal measures are both alike an abomination to the Lord.
Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord.
But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be your slave, even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

i also did not include quite a few quotes because of context, something that Moggy (i am sure not on purpose) did not do.
for example, much of the man as head-of, and submit etc. are either from the Old Testament or from Romans, which are both notoriously patriarchal even compared to the rest!
my point is that, you can cherry pick what you want, religion is an excuse for these disgusting people in the US, it could equally be an excuse for a great person or people to stand up to them an correct this mistake and give Roe v Wade's protections back

As Heskimo said, if the Bible says women are the property (or at least, should obey) of men, then it absolutely gives men the right to legislate women's choices.

And it's no good saying "yeah but the really bad stuff is only in the Old Testament or Romans" if you then talk about other people cherry picking.
