I don't know shot about tech stuff, but how is it taking so long? Is it the amount of data or something else?

Surely it would be cheaper to bump the specs for the import then bring them back down afterwards?

I can spin up something much beefier for free if you want, I was running a 4core/8GB in my work test account before to test out Discourse. I think GG also floated the idea of a few of us chipping in for one month with a similarly specced box to what they were looking at using long term?

How does embedding media links in Discourse posts work? Does it just have the one thing where you paste in the URL and it does it automatically without having to piss about with individual tags for individual platforms like here?

Do you see the url when you quote it? Is the post editor still all plaintext or is it what-you-see-is-what-you-get? I have most embeds blocked, Tweets on here for example don't show up, so I have to quote to get the url to copy-paste. I use another forum where that is impossible because it's all richly formatted even when quoting.

Just tested. I created a post with an embedded YouTube video, blocked the element. When I started a reply and quoted the OP, the YouTube URL was there.

Why do you block embeds?

I use noscript + adblock + privacy badger for privacy and security reasons and some combination of that breaks twitter embeds even if you try to enable the scripts for them.

It’s probably tracking blocking. If I have tracking protection on Firefox on iOS I don’t see twitter embeds anymore.

Update for all, Minty has kindly provided a far more powerful server for us to test on (I should have taken him up on this sooner, sorry all). The import is progressing quickly, it's about 3.5% done now, after about 4 hours. Quick maths tells us it will take about 6 days at this rate to finish. However, on the other server it seemed to slow down as it went, so we'll have to see how it goes.

That twitter embed dying also happens for me in Firefox with tracking blocked. You have to allow it. Thing OR is concerned about is valid as these embedded social media things include trackers so forums are full of those too.

If a test environment needs some money to pay for a month I can send that to whoever, let's just not make it too tempting to actually roll out on said server and pay x amount of dosh without looking at affordability first. :D

Would be good to do that on some virtual environment so can play with memory allocation, number of processes etc. and find out what we actually need to run such software instead of just paying for empty capacity.

Once a discourse instance is done, it won't take that much CPU to run. We could move the instance off mintys test server to a more appropriately specced one.

My concern is how to deal with the difference between the export and grcade live given the time it seems to take to import. We can't just take it offline for a week!

If we were still planning to do a "clean break" what with the DB issues we seem to have now, we could bring a Discourse instant live, lock off the current site, then import the current site into some sort of archive area maybe?

Update, 28% import completed. It actually seems to have sped up a little bit.
