Is this your first deck, or did you upgrade from the LCD version?

Pretty simple, I had ToTK running around launch. Yuzu is pretty well developed as an emulator.

Ok cool, will be checking that out this evening then!

An upgrade, although the LCD one will be hanging around for my partner and I might use it more for emulation etc.

I would always temper expectations with Switch emulation. Some stuff will run flawlessly, yes, but some stuff still struggles.
Between Yuzu and Ryujinx most stuff is covered and newer games get working pretty quickly.
You do have to manually source and add patches and DLC in both emulators which can be fiddly.

But it's not too complicated and it's simple enough once you know what you are doing.

I'm replaying Metroid Dread on it just now and it's practically indistinguishable from the real thing.
I do try out newer games but for the most part I stick to stuff I've bought anyway.

They're one of the most impressive pairs of emulators I've ever used.

Yeah I never go in expecting 100% perfect performance on newer systems, but I did manage to get Mario Kart 8 working last night and it runs extremely well so that's a decent start!

For games like MK8 or BoTW that were on WiiU, CemU has been a stable emulator as well, and obviously benefits from being a bit older and having more time spent on it.

Dock arrived today! Trying to connect my Xbox Series X controller to the Steam Deck, I have found it and paired it but the Xbox pad just keeps flashing and won’t actually allow me to use it…..anyone had this?

You might need to update the controller, or do a system update on the deck. Failing that, power cycling the Deck cures most hiccups.

Failing that, I'd recommend an Xbox wireless adapter. They have better latency than straight bluetooth, and they're much easier to sync with pads. It does require a bit of tinkering in Desktop mode to work properly on the Deck, but it's quite simple to do.

Ta, I managed to get a Dualsense connected so perhaps it’s the Xbox controller that needs updating, I’ll give it a try.

Yeah I had issues with the Xbox controller connecting until I did a firmware update on it, now it works flawlessly :toot:

I need to get back to trying out Yuzu again, it didn't work "out of the box" for me when I first tried it so I abandoned the idea but I probably just need to spend more than 2 minutes trying!

Switch emulation has a couple of things you need to be aware of. Especially on Deck there is some in-emulator tweaking to do.

First you need an appropriate firmware as well as a dump of your prod.keys file from your switch. Both can be found online. :shifty:
Both Yuzu and Ryujinx require you to provide these and you will from time to time have to update them with more recent versions. That usually happens after big Nintendo releases where they update the firmware around about the same time (TOTK was a big one). Some games will not appear in the emulators game list if it doesn't have the correct key file.

Beyond that, Switch emulation is mostly a case of putting your ROMs in the correct place and letting the emulator find them.

Most Switch ROMs will be .nsp or .xci files. My understanding is that one of them is a cart rip and the other a digital copy.

The other thing to be aware of is that you can install updates and DLC for the games in both emulators which is desirable for obvious reasons.
Yuzu has an "Install to Nand" option in the File menu where you can install patches and DLC. They will automatically be applied to the appropriate games. Once installed you can manage a games updates/DLC from the game properties screen.
Ryujinx requires you to right-click the game in the list and choose "Manage Updates" or "Manage DLC" to add them for that title.
Both emulators should refresh their lists with details of the game version and DLC installed.

Also make sure you toggle the option to "Confirm exit" to off in both emulators. Makes it easier to cleanly close them as the pop-up "Are you sure you want to quit" option often appears "under" the game window and the SD can be funny about switching between them.

If you are using Emudeck and EmulationStation, you can set a specific emulator for each game as well. Within ES, highlight the game you want and open the menu.
It will be the one that gives you the option to edit that games metadata. Within that option there is a field for "Alternative Emulator" which lets you specify which one to use. So if you find Ryujinx runs a game better you can toggle it to use it by default.

I think that's about it.

Thanks for the info Devlin, I'll probably take another swing at Switch emulation soon!

Downloaded the demo of Hitman World of Assassination, looks and runs great on the deck. Still amazed that I can play PS4 era games on a portable device and they look and perform great!

Hitman deluxe edition is £38 on Steam at the mo, 55% off, tempted

It looks like it’s got all the extra content from all 3 games, £38 is good price then?

Oh absolutely. It's jam packed full of content and the replay ability is off the charts.

Have you ever played a Hitman game? They're very methodical and more like a puzzle game than something like MGS or Splinter Cell.

Making me want to play it again now and I've spent hundreds of hours on it already across multiple platforms

Not played much of any of them really, I did enjoy the demo level of this new Hitman though

You're in for a treat. Three whole games worth of murdery sandbox fun.
I really should get round to three at some point.
