Yeah just compatibility updates really, they will be released via Valve not the actual game devs.

You can change it so games only update when you launch them if it bugs you.

I just wondered why they were daily, is it the same update downloading all the time? I just wondered if it’s constantly downloading and taking up more and more space or if it’s just overwriting the previous days update.

Yeah it's nothing to worry about, just ongoing optimisation of the shaders to improve performance in games - the "fixed platform" nature of the deck means that they can deliver these in advance to everyone so you don't get issues like shader compilation stutter which some games are haunted by on PC as each system needs to compile these on-the-fly normally.

I think there is a community aspect to it as well where other players cache's are being distributed if/when they have been generated and include something that yours doesn't?

I'm sure I read that the pre shaders made it so Elden Ring ran better at launch on Steam Deck than it did on windows PCs because of poorly optimised shaders.

So it's quite a neat feature really and usually not the biggest updates.

Nah the updates are small it was the fact they were everyday, I thought something was wrong with my Deck

Yeah they are very much incremental updates, to the point where maybe it could just be one room in one level of a game having less slowdown or something. But each update adds up. As mentioned earlier because every single steam deck has the same specs that's how they can do this. In a way it takes away those pesky console gamers main argument of "it just works" :)

It always gets my hopes up when I see updates downloading though as I always wonder if it's gonna be a feature update but is nearly always just shaders!

GR, I’m wanting to play Silent Hill 2 on Steam Deck and have seen a mod called SH2 Enhanced Edition which seems to be a mod for the PC release of Silent Hill 2 Directors Cut?

Thing is, I don’t have Silent Hill 2 on Steam, don’t think it’s available to buy any more? Anyone know where I could snag a copy and then install this enhanced mod?

I imagine it's probably referring to the PC version that would have come out way back in 2002 that I doubt ever had a steam release. You'll need to find that through alternate means bud. If I was to play it I'd probably just emulate the PS2 version if it was me but I don't know how extensive that mod is to be far.

I was going to emulate the Xbox version originally but then I heard about this enhanced mod for PC and thought it might be a better route. I’ll read up on it a bit more and see what exactly the mod adds to the experience and if it’s worth the hassle of tracking down the PC version.

There's a set up guide for the enhanced PC edition here:

Yeah I see that video, it doesn’t mention where to pick up a copy of the base game however.

EDIT: Is My abandonedware a safe site to download from anyone know?

Never had any issues with it, that's how I played Silent Hill 2 on PC with the mod. (Granted on PC and not via Deck itself)

Yeah my abandonware is a great site.
As to how safe it is I couldn't say. I've never had any issues with it, but I'd be hesitant to say it's 100% safe.
I've downloaded loads from there though. They've got a great archive of stuff. Loads of obscure PC games.

Cheers all, I’ll give this a go then seeing as Seven has downloaded it already

I absolutely love this console, the fact I can basically play anything on it and have the option to play handheld or on the telly, just a fantastic machine all round

The only Silent Hill to ever release on Steam was Homecoming.

All my controller binds for all my emulators (or at least Duckstation and Dolphin) running on emudeck seem to have stopped working. Possibly it has coincided with a software update, and can hopefully be resolved, but it's bloody annoying.

Edit - fixed, just needed to reassign controller order.

Can someone tell me if the Steam Decks local saves remain installed if you uninstall the game in question? I am interested in purchasing a game but Proton DB suggests that cloud saves do not work (despite it saying that they do). I have limited room on my Deck and would like to know I can reinstall the game in a year or two and make different choices in the game in question without having to start a new game.

I'm not sure if they do either, it's an interesting question and I can't find details either way for certain.

But what you could always do is drop into desktop mode and backup the save game manually, maybe to Google Drive or similar. Then restore it when you come back to it. Ghetto cloud saves ;)

We should migrate GRcade to Flarum. :toot:

Thanks for the tip. I wouldn't even know where to navigate to for saves though. I'm sure I could research it but it's more effort than I am prepared to go to.

But I do appreciate the suggestion - I just know myself too well!

Can you not back them up on a MicroSD as a precaution?
