When communities create mods for games, how would you install them on a Deck? Is it just a download you can get within Steam?

So in steam, there is a ‘workshop’, which is all the mods. I’ve only done it this way for Xcom 2. But in theory, this should work still with the steam deck.

It might be a case of going to the games page, and almost like dlc, hopefully picking mods.

There are other modding platforms, and there are preferred ones for games. But if the workshop was bolstered, or could be really simple.

The more I see if this, the more unsure I am about keeping my pre-order. I mean, it's an impressive bit of kit but it's so ugly I can't see myself ever wanting to be seen with it in public. So I have to think realistically how often I'd actually use it after the initial novelty has worn off.

I’m thinking about it. I don’t go out really. So it’s a lounge toy, while the Mrs is watching trash… I could just head to the office and play the main PC?

Im also considering cancelling my Xbox series x halo infinite edition order. I don’t need it with gamepass. Impulse order because I could.

For me, I don’t have a PC so this would double up as a gaming PC as well as handheld. I am tempted to sell off my Series X to then go towards one of these but I may wait and see how the initial reacts are to the device.

Looks like peripherals will work just fine.

As for why I'm after one of these, and whether I need it, I don't really need one, I've got a perfectly capable PC here already, but it's at the desk I now work from home at, so having spent 9-5 mon-fri sitting there, I don't necessarily want to stay there to relax in the evenings or weekends. I just want to be able to pick up and play my library around the house, without the input lag that comes with Steam Link, or gamepass streaming on android. I've got a baby in the house now, so free time is scarce, and convenience is important, because I don't know when my free time activities are going to be interrupted. A device I can move around the house, maybe play with headphones on while still in the same room as my wife, rather than having to go and shut myself off in another room, will hopefully see me get back to spending more time gaming. Even if it doesn't see me spending a lot more time on my games, it's been a long while since I treated myself to daft fancy gadget, and this is probably one of the more interesting bits of tech I've seen released in a while, so really intrigued to see what it can do.

Nice, they really are doing a lot to make this a smooth start.

That's looking very promising! That's the kind of attention to detail it will need to be a good experience.

Yeah looking good.

The benefit of it being essentially a fixed spec (Storage space variations aside) is going to be massive in allowing devs to properly optimise to the hardware so I'm hopeful we'll see most games make it to at least playable status.

I'm looking forward to seeing how well older stuff like Jedi Knight is going to play.

Nice. Hoping you'll also be able to filter your existing library by those tags.

Very cool they are going to the effort of really making it easy for those new to the PC game space. I really want to get a hold of one and see how it feels to play.

Just watched it again, and there is a screenshot of the same "great on deck" sorting for the library as they talk about in the store.

There's also a longer video up on the Steam works developers channel.

Big list of Linux native, pixel art indie games, all running on the deck, in this thread...

I think I'll keep my pre-order. If anything, I think the Deck will encourage me to finally play some of the visual novel type games I haven't yet gotten around to like Danganronpa 2 and Nonary Games.
