Very much agree with this. I really hope it succeeds for Valve. They're clearly put a lot of thought into user experience.

It feels an odd choice to release this holiday season, when they'll be effectively competing with newly stocked PS5s and XSXs, on top of Switch OLED. I guess their projected production capacity is likely to sell out on pre-orders.

When someone mentioned dual booting batocera, that's when I became interested in this.

The more I read into this, the more I'm convinced this is something I really want. Even tempted by the top end model with the largest/fastest storage and anti glare screen. Hope availability is good, rather than this becoming another paper launch.

Would you be able to use this with a shared library? You or whomever on the main PC and someone else using the Deck but accessing your library and playing a different game.

My only worry is that it's too PC. The best thing about a console is you put in a game and play it. I'd hate to have to mess about with settings to get things working properly.

The idea of game pass and playing Killer Instinct or halo on the move is hard to say no to.

Wish my image sig would work

I think I'm going to get this.
One question I do have though is that I haven't logged into my steam account in many many years and other than my email being the same erm, I'm unsure if it's still active.
I remember I had something silly like 100 games (I used to be all about the super awesome steam sales) but have no idea if they'll still be available. I think the newest game I bought was something like maybe Rome Total war 2, when was that out?

As far as I am aware they don't delete accounts, even VAC bans don't stop you accessing the games you have paid for. Give it a try, if it doesn't work send a ticket to steamsupport and they will help (they have improved so much in the last few years). https://help.steampowered.com/en/

"Netflix plans to offer video games in a push beyond film and TV" https://twitter.com/i/events/1415623923333541890

Well, they're all at it.

If this thing gets Netflix on board alongside its own library and Gamepass? That's a lot of portable gaming.

Shame it doesn't have an equivalent to the Switch's dock allowing easy TV play. I'm guessing it's patent protected by Nintendo.

There is going to be a dock, you can plug it in to a TV / monitor and then the peripherals in to that and use it as a PC. Sadly no confirmed release date on that.

Steam Deck Dock.

I like the idea of a portable PC to play my extensive Steam library as well as other PC games and even emulators. The weight of the device is putting me off as the Switch feels cumbersome to me after long play sessions. I'll see how impressions are after it launches as it will mean being able to play things like Civilization and Baldur's Gate on the go without rebuying the Switch version.

Consoles have been getting more like PCs over time anyway, with constant patches, settings available for mid life cycle SKU upgrades, and now picking and choosing settings for frame rate or image quality optimisation.

Most modern PC titles come with the ability to auto detect settings for your hardware, and if this is popular enough, it won't be long before optimal profiles for games on a steam deck are widely available or even built in to new releases.

Absolutely. From initial impressions, I wonder if this system is for existing PC gamers who like the idea of portable play but who also don't mind the downgrade in performance. I'd guess that most PC gamers enjoy the tech and power that their systems offer; they're not so much into running games on lower tech.

I can't see too many non-PC gamers choosing this over a a handheld console; it'll probably be too techy, complicated and heavy for their tastes.

Even so, it'll probably sell huge numbers because the idea is intriguing. There will be many thousands (millions!) of hardcore PC gamers keen to try it out.

This is definitely targeted at people who already have an existing Steam library. Going by big picture mode on desktop, I'm sure there's no reason this couldn't be an accessible way for someone new to Steam to get into their system, but they certainly won't be getting the full PC gaming experience either.

Are all Microsoft's first party games on the PC Gamepass? Is this basically a portable Xbox in that sense?
