Bought this on Switch as it was rude not to.

Poncle are working on Cross Save, a new ‘Adventure’ mode and other updates including the Directors Cut that got shown off a few weeks ago!

I haven't bought it, Milner, although it's getting so many favourable responses that I think I might pick it up at the weekend.

Got to level 38 on the Library level yesterday with the second character you unlock. Had a good build going with a level 5 garlic along with the holy book at level 3 and the fire and magic wands, just got overrun at the end and none of the candles were dropping a roast chicken to heal

The second character is great for quickly amounting XP especially when combining her with crowns

I did see this, immediately put it down as a generic low price game with retro sprites, and was confused why it was in the top 10 Switch chart.

I am ashamed to call myself a gamer.

It's such a fun game. Trying to make sure your levelling up is able to keep pace with the enemies, especially once you get to the end of the stages is where I found a lot of fun. Looking at different combos of weapons and items to see what build worked well for me.

I envy people playing it for the first time now.

For shame. But I get it, the game was literally put together with an asset pack at first. It looks gooseberry fool

But it's phenomenal fun once you understand it. Get it played man.

Games literally half the price of a pint of beer these days, I wonder what is better value. If they are fun.

Yeah, I had a run this morning on Mad Forest, had a great build with Garlic, Holy Bible and a ton of projectiles pinging out every second  once the 20 minute mark hit a ton of enemies appeared and just wiped me out.

I'm saving my coins to get the revival perk, it's 10,000 coins  I noticed prices go up once you start buying upgrades so I reversed all my previously bought upgrades and now saving up for expensive ones.

Yep, I've just tried it for the first time and echo this. It makes the player too passive and the early stages really dull. The first five minutes seem to be the same each time, then it ramps up, then you're dead.

It's only the breadcrumbs laid by the permanent unlocks that feel compelling. Gameplay-wise, I'm not drawn back by the thought of spending the early parts of each game just running away and moving between enemies.

It lacks the punch of something like Hades' combat. For bullet hell shooting, it lacks the immediacy and agency of Enter the Gungeon.

This is essentially the same dynamic as a lot of bullet hell shooters and top-down/side scrolling shooters. You have various weapons/upgrades/pickups that auto attack enemies but all it does it help you navigate the playfield, because 90% of the skill in a game like that (knowing it's virtually impossible to hit every enemy) is avoiding them instead.

In such games, to play well, you have to view enemy projectiles and the enemy abstractly as obstacles rather than targets, making it a game of agility, not accuracy, and trying to avoid being distracted from the ducking and weaving you have to do to survive. That's the zen focus aspect;- it's never really been about attacking enemies, as you will defeat them eventually with enough hits, whereas they can overwhelm you in split seconds. You have to adapt your mindset to the game, which is itself challenging.

It's a game of concentration between you and your monkey mind; it's a game against yourself.
It can feel very uncomfortable where if you win, you defeat yourself, and if you lose, you also defeat yourself. You are long term rewarded for suppressing the need to chase objects and essentially fulfil distractions (short term reward / hunter instinct /dopamine circuit), and punished for seeking the same pleasures fulfilled by the vast majority of games developed on impulse and fast, repetitive rewards. That's very counter-intuitive but makes for a very different sort of game. It's rewarding persistence and strategy (the the gatherer instinct) i.e. farming, which is a very different part of the brain and not really something we associate with small action games.

Most games don't reward long play sessions like rogue-likes, which need perseverance, they focus on the lowest friction rewards and instant gratification i.e. quick wins. And that's fine. What can seem aimless, and a waste of time, is a bit of a trick the mind plays because it isn't being rewarded instantly until you meet certain thresholds and you might call that mastery of something that at first seems both aimless and punishing.

Got to 29:32 in the library and got overrun and died  so close to the full half hour, unlocking some good gear though, I also evolved the whip and garlic in that run. The Dove is great once it’s powered up as well.

With the garlic you want to try to get much XP from the low level enemies right at the very start. Just go in small circles if you have to and gain enough to level the garlic up a bit in that phase as it'll help you resist some of the stuff that follows shortly after, otherwise you can find yourself taking hits.

Yeah, the evolved garlic when it gets you health as well is very handy. I do love when you get to the later stages of a run and it’s just barrage of projectiles and things circling around you

Cleared the first two levels with the Alucard fireball man.

This runs well enough on the Switch. Was nice playing it on the plane home :D

Just in case Jawa still needs convincing that there's no challenge understanding what's on screen on the switch:
