That edges TTYD into the lead then. It's a shame but I suppose if we're being honest, it did really well to get so high, and I can understand the desire to not want the top eight to just be Nintendo games. (Even if the best eight of the remaining ten are Nintendo games!)

Paper Mario rarely troubles 'Top X' lists of games outside of this place so I guess it's very GR for it to place so high.

I maintain that it's a spotless game; while I'd not argue that there are no better games, I'd also argue that there are no legitimate criticisms to level at the game. There's nothing you could change about it to make it a more joyful, playable experience. I'd recommend it to anyone who hasn't played it yet - even if you don't like RPGs (I don't!)

That's the gracious part of this post.
The other part is me calling on those of you voting Half Life 2 today...

Metroid Prime should probably be going next tbh. I'm surprised at how few votes its getting.

Cannot believe people are so fixated on HL2 and RE4 two of the best games ever, whilst Mario 64 is just skating through.

As Dan just said, Paper Mario is sublime, so I’m very disappointed to have to vote for it now when it could have gone much higher.

I mean, all those Nintendo games and you lot focus in on this one? I repeat: Paper Mario.

This is a perfect summary of TTYD.

I could get behind voting to save it, but even though I prefer it to HL2 and Resi4 I'm not sure I can get behind kicking one of them out now when a couple of the other Mario's and Metroid are still there.

This reads like you're suggesting Mario 64 isn't one of the best games ever...

It isn't.

I stopped playing it on the 4th level IIRC.

Not a fan of 3D platformers?

Or did you play it late?

According to this thread it doesn't matter when you play a game, but yes, 2005.

You know that a whole bunch of 3D platformers are amongst my favourite games, I just think SM64 is pretty meh.

As I said on the Twitchcast last Sunday. When I first played SM64 when it came out. I hated the game. I played it later and changed my mind, thinking it was good, but that's it. Good. I strawberry floating love Galaxy though.

I guess it'll depend on what people may want from Mario, some want exploration, where that means little to me, I'm happy on a more linear path with pure joyous platforming.

Thanks for replying. Yeah I thought you did like plenty of 3D platformers but I've often gotten GR posters mixed up before, apologies.

It's fascinating though, I wasn't as fussed about SM64 when I first played it because I'd played Banjo Kazooie first and so the "OMG 3D" moment was taken away. It was only later that I came to enjoy Mario 64 for its own strengths.

Even having said that though, it's not a game I'd have anywhere near the top of my own personal list... so much of it is frustrating that I couldn't even guarantee I'd want to replay it again! And it's been comprehensively bettered by Galaxy 1 & 2 and of course Odyssey (which I've recently gone back to and am loving).

I think it's really interesting how much personal perspective and indescribable quirks play into opinions of these type. I know I'm certainly as guilty as anyone of being over the top in this thread and others, but Resi 4 to give one example: I was a huge GameCube supporter (There's no better word for it if we're being honest!) back in the day so obviously I got it at launch, and... I just didn't find anything particularly special or playable there. Does that make it a bad game, just because it's a bad game to me? Does my sole opinion carry more weight against that of professional analysts and mass consensus? It does... to me. Does that make it valid here? What is it about the game that puts me off? What is it that makes it outstanding to others and why don't those criteria apply to me?

Half Life 2 was much the same - I just found it to be boring, bland, repetitive and utterly without character. But are there mitigating circumstances at work here? I've never gotten on with any of Capcom's games. Does the fundamental way in which they design not click with me for a specific reason, the nuances of which I'm yet to understand? Does the fact I've never played HL1 have an impact and explain why I felt like the game was totally devoid of a compelling narrative? Etc etc.

Another interesting point: TTYD aside all the remaining games are Edge 10s.

"The coveted Edge 10!"

If we were to be honest then we'd recognise that Edge was always a terrible magazine and remains so to this day.

For years Edge magazine's scores and opinions were all over the shop and often purposefully controversial because they were really nothing more than massive attention seeking trolls, albeit trolls with a Thesaurus. The printed version of click-bait.

That’s harsh. Is (or was) there a better video game publication?

Mario64 was, at the time, the single most creative game I had ever played and, even now with odyssey, the format remains (not to mention the myriad of non-nintendo clones).

For what it’s worth, there’s still time to save paper Mario. I’ll change my vote, but only to another Nintendo game.
