Tbf he has a point, I don’t think there’s been a classic stand-out single player FPS after Half-Life 2. Maybe that’s me not playing as many (or as much variety of) games as I used to though

Perhaps that means the genre was done, though.

Get insanely clever bots (like in Perfect Dark at the top level), and die constantly. No fun. So everything becomes MP where you play humans that you can second guess / trick / who make mistakes, and vice versa, and that unpredictability brings the fun back.

If it's the story element that's lacking - well, a traditional FPS interacts just by shooting stuff, so it's pretty simple and going to peak in its form at some point. The only thing to do is start adding RPG type elements to mix things up a bit. Hence hybrids like Deus Ex or Far Cry etc.

Regardless, Halo itself was a brilliant game, it's sequels more mixed depending on your point of view. But I don't think you can blame them for wrecking a genre, unless that genre was already ready to die.

Edit - then again, I suppose it's perfectly valid to dislike a game because of what it represents to you.
