I just think you can often tell how bad a rap song is by the amount of times it uses *****.

Reminds me of scary Terry

Same. But if you're not black and love rap / hip-hop you will be hearing songs with the n-word and people naturally sing a long to songs. I don't equate this as somebody shouting out insults to others with the word. When there was the whole fuss about PewDiePie a few weeks back I read an article and was surprised to learn that some people regard there to be a difference between the word ****** and *****, and one being bad and one not? Somebody wrote, I'm paraphrasing, 'It's not even as if he said ***** he said ******.' That is a world of language and politics that I was unaware of! I also didn't know how the writer could tell the difference as they don't sound like they're pronounced differently - unless context is what makes them different. I don't know. But this Coates fella comes across as a considered and eloquent speaker.

The bottom line is that context matters. As that video pretty much states. Same as with any word.
The PewDiePie thing kind of demonstrates that. Did he say the word because he was trying to be racist? No, he doesn't even know what the other player looks like, he said it because he knows how offensive it is and in the heat of the moment it was the worst possible thing he could have thought to say.

No, he doesn't even know what the other player looks like, he said it because he knows how offensive it is and in the heat of the moment it was the worst possible thing he could have thought to say.

I'm not sure that example fits what he's saying about context. Coates is saying words have a context in who is saying it and the dynamic they share with who they are saying it to. It isn't acceptable for him to use the word 'bitch' casually among his wife and her friends like they do, nor for him to take his white friend's use of 'white trash' and repeat it back to him because he does not, and crucially cannot, share the same dynamic as the group who uses those words in those ways.

So it isn't acceptable for non-black hip hop fans to use certain words while singing along to them just because the context of using them in that moment isn't directly malicious or consciously racist. It's simply crowding in on a group dynamic under the assumption that you're automatically allowed to.

Mmmmmm, Nixie Tubes. It 38 minutes long but well worth the time.

The guy making the tubes makes clocks with them, I would love one but I don't have £1600 to throw down on one.

Um...

EDIT: Context doesn't matter if PDP was describing the behaviour and not the person.

There was a Techmoan about custom NT watches. Cost a bomb but looked like a really good conversational piece.
