He said in the past two weeks he could remember his dreams again and that only happens when he’s not stressed. Fella was going misty eyed for a minute.

I’m speculating of course but it seems like Jeff tried to make it work after Brad/Vinny/Alex left but it caught up to him. Couldn’t have been fun trying to keep things afloat during Covid, can just imagine red ventures trying to get people on furlough.

All’s well that ends well though eh.

The stress of what, exactly? After Patrick Klepek left, GB became the laziest website imaginable. No reviews, no news, GOTY discussions where people admitted not having played many titles that year at all. I swear there were about 3 years in which Brad played nothing but DOTA and talked on a podcast once a week. Hell of a gig. For all the talk of Jeff trying to 'reimagine' video gaming content etc, he spent about 10 years drinking from a jar and listlessly talking about the past. Good luck to anyone paying for more of that.

Yeah I don't agree with you on that at all. He spent a good portion of his podcast last night praising Games Pass and gushing over Tunic, dude is extremely into what's going on right now. Retro gaming is a decent part of the discourse nowadays and it's a personal taste thing if you're into hearing about that or not (personally I am looking forward to some MISTER streams). He never aired dirty laundry he just said it was affecting his home life so I think like him or not you have to respect him for starting over. It's quite obvious that he wasn't given the creative freedom to "reimagine" as you say and that's why he's gone.

Fair enough, although I should clarify that I don't doubt Jeff is on top of trends, new games etc, it isn't reflected in any kind of decent content anymore.

I think back in the day, with the full team including Ryan Davis, and especially during GOTY discussions and E3, Giant Bomb was unmissable and so creative (the 2012 sketches in particular, were brilliant). I think that in recent years it's died a slow death and I place some of the blame on what appears to be a very lax and jaded 'that'll do' approach to content. The ways in which the average Bombcast, GOTY discussion or 'Quick Look' ballooned in length spoke to a lack of discipline IMO.

At work so can't watch the clip but it would explain why Vinny and Alex have been guesting on some recent nuGB Splatoon streams and Jeff seems to be persona non grata.

It really bums me out that they're all fractured now. Ryan Davis era GB as well as 2014-2016 when they were pumping out features like metal gear scanlon, mario party party and demo derby were the BEST.

Jeff's podcast is good and tbh I don't really bother with the rest as I don't have the time.

Are they really, though? To me, Nextlander is the spiritual successor to Giant Bomb and maintains much of the same feel with a chunk of the original core together. It would be nice for them to do some stuff together with Jeff occasionally, but maybe some bridges have been burnt there.

There are, but Giant Bomb classic is essentially Giant Bomb in name only. For better or worse, it is an entirely different site now. The only real fracture is between Jeff and the Nextlander crew, and they each seem content doing their own thing. I enjoy both shows, but they have completely different styles. It feels like Nextlander is continuing the Giant Bomb legacy, while Jeff is sticking more with the one-man news and commentary type show.
