VPNs are too business critical to ban. So yes, this goverment probably will try to ban them as they have repeatedly proven themselves technologically incompetent.

It would be impossible to ban anyway, it's encrypted traffic. They could ban the companies selling them but that is MAJOR 1984 vibes. There are plenty of innocuous reasons to use a VPN.

Fwiw, I don't actually think that about VPN's and am considering using one mainly to access US Netflix and switch to using torrents to acquire USTV shows (currently use Usenet) without worrying about being tracked.

The access to porn after April would just be a bonus.

I use NordVPN and now everyday my phone gives me a warning that VPNs have access to my emails and phone calls but I thought the point to them was to hide you from things like that happening

It's free and open source, and works better than any paid for service I've used which a lot of the time get their IP's blacklisted from sites like netflix and then never reset them.

It's very straight forward to use, the only downside is sometimes you will get disconnected from a connection and might need to re-boot your pc before you can re-connect.

Your VPN supplier stops your internet supplier from watching whatever you're doing but that means your VPN supplier can see everything you're doing instead.

The reason for this is down to how data is handled over the internet. When you're browsing normally your ISP would be able to see websites you visit and data you send and receive in packet form. For things like What'sApp and Email these packets are encrypted and they can't see what's inside these packets. For larger downloads in normal file formats the data probably isn't encrypted and they can use package inspection tools to get an idea of what it is you're downloading and sending. Most of them don't bother too much because it's more bother than it's worth and they don't really care about the specifics of what you're downloading. Normally they already know anyway because of the website you're on when you start the download. For example: You go to the Steam page for Soul Calibur and start downloading something, they could take an educated guess that you've just downloaded the game Soul Calibur without have to actually scan what you're downloading. Due to GDPR most of them can no longer store and hold metadata about you as an individual that identifies you as said individual.

When you connect through a VPN you're effectively connecting to a different computer that then connects to the websites you want for you. All the data that now flows to and from your computer is encrypted so that now, when your ISP sees the data traveling across your network, all they see is you connecting to one specific place and they have no idea where you're being forwarded to or what you're downloading.

With this you're just transferring your privacy from your ISP to your VPN provider. One of those two is under more governmental influence than the other, so if you're worried about 1984 I'd take the VPN option over the ISP option.

This is also why it's important to choose a VPN with a verified no logs policy. Unsurprisingly, most of the big ones have this as standard.

I've used it successfully with Netflix in multiple regions, including the US and Canada, but obviously it will only work on your computer browser. Smart TVs will still need a DNS service let Netflix.

For occasional torrents I have had a good experience using windscribeVPN although bear in mind it is based in Canada which also has a surveillance program, detail here https://securitygladiators.com/windscribe-vpn-review/

It's 10Gb for free though, it's not super fast but it works fine. And it's arguable whether any US or Canadian surveillance will reach GCHQ just for downloading a torrent.

For the people out there that pay for a VPN service. Does netflix work well with them?

I use Hotspot Shield, and no they don't at least for Japan, I havn't tried for the US one in a long time. When you contact customer support they just tell you they're aware of the problem and are working on it, but they never do anything.

Netflix routinely block IPs from known VPNs so the VPN service basically needs a gooseberry fool load of rotating and constantly retiring IPs in circulation to circumvent the bans, so they sometimes work and usually don't is the only real answer. The more expensive ones will say they do.

I mean, I chose my VPN just after this so what, 6 months ago? Went with Private Internet Access and it's done its job, far as I can see. And, you know, it's cheap.
