Morning all.

Quick and nasty; I want a VPN. I've done some research and feel I know what I'm looking for (absolutely no logs, torrenting allowed, decent speeds) and three names keep popping up:

ExpressVPN
NordVPN
PrivateInternetAccess

Just wondering of anyone on here uses one, and if so which VPN is the best for general use?

I've used NordVPN for about 2 years now and not had any issues with it.

I know nothing about VPNs but I've also been looking and talked to someone who knows a lot about this. She said Nord and Express are great, Express is the best if you want Netflix, Nord has more technical options but doesn't work as well with Netflix.

I wonder if in a few years time there’s going to a be a vpn scandal where something dodgy has been going with these companies. I get an uneasy feeling about them.

It's a possibility.

The choice comes down to: do I trust this random, possibly sketchy company, or do I trust the UK government?

And sadly the correct answer is "well I sure don't trust the UK government".

(FWIW Nord are pretty big and well-known in paranoid nerd circles, so I personally think they're pretty unlikely to ever do anything 'bad' with your connection.)

I actually went with Private Internet Access, simply because it was the cheapest and on most well known review sites (Tom's, CNET etc) came out either on a par with Nord or just below. Nord has an annoying pricing structure where the only competitive monthly fee is on the three year contract which I don't want right now. Also, PIA is apparently faster whilst being just as secure.

Most of my tech savvy friends actually suggested ProtonVPN, a relatively new one from the Proton Email guys. It was too expensive though at €8 a month

I used to use a browser extension based free VPN called Hola, but stopped when it turned out that connecting to then also meant they were using your PC as a node for others to connect through.

Yeah, I was using the Hola browser app. I didn't know the above, but I did know that they started spamming pop-ups trying to get you to upgrade to their premium service.

Also, it looks like Nord's parent company Tesonet was caught in the same controversy:

The copyright infringement lawsuit (trial info) involves Tesonet and Luminati Networks, which are believed to be the parent companies behind NordVPN and HolaVPN, respectively. The allegations within the lawsuit raise serious questions about NordVPN and whether it is in the business of reselling user bandwidth through a proxy service operated by Tesonet in Lithuania – exactly like Hola was caught doing a few years ago.

I use ExpressVPN and don't have any complaints.

Ah, that's cool, I hadn't seen ProtonVPN -- I know the Proton Mail people are very outspoken on privacy so I can see their VPN being pretty good.

I only went with it because I managed to get a good discount during the Black Friday sales. Took a risk and bought a year.

Neither do I, especially since this critter was also present in it...

Anyone else think the government will try banning VPN's soon after the new online age verification system comes into effect?

It'd probably be met with public support too, after all why use one if you've got nothing to hide?
