RIP in peace. He always seemed to be a good bloke on the pitch, and in his off pitch interviews. Wales' results seemed to be turning around too.

It does seem dodgy though about the rumours that the press had a story on him. I dont know how the investigation will go, but surely the police should explore this press avenue.

I know the police should investigate and all, but what good will it do as the guy is dead. Surely no need to drag his name through the mud if there is a some dodgy story :? Difficult one

Wow, going to agree with Beans for the first time. I think it's best left alone, let his family grieve and remember him. I am sure his wife and kids will one day want to know why and that is the time something should be done. Now is not the right time.

Can't say I agree. There's got to be a reason why he'd take his life, now if it was because of blackmail or for fear of exposure for something, then I think those people should be held accountable. The longer it's left, then the more likely it'll be swept under the carpet.

Good point about if blackmail is involved. If an investigation is conducted though, it certainly doesn't need to be in the public domain I'm sure you will agree.

Just the way the world works now would mean it'd end up in the public domain. As soon as they find out why he killed himself it'll be out there on the news. Papers need good stories to sell papers. This is a story of interest to a lot of people. They won't let this one rest.

Whilst I know you are right, doesn't that make you feel a bit sad. Does me.

Not into football or football culture at all but was in a car tuned to 5live when this broke yesterday: to hear the journos and players go completely silent was really quite hard to listen to, as was their struggling to continue the programme and talk about it.

Very sad.

I don't feel sorry for anyone that kills himself . Sorry but that is my opinion when he was taken his own life he didn't feel sorry for his kids so why should I ?

If he was a loner I would have felt sorry for him but he shattered his kids forever and that in my book is the ultimate coward or he got killed by the welsh illuminati. Props later.

Well that's certainly one opinion. I'd say it was narrowminded in the extreme and, and I mean this in the purest sense of the word, ignorant, but you're entitled to it.

I wouldn't want to cast aspersions towards a situation I was so unfamiliar with or towards a context so far removed from my own.

It's not ignorant at all . Take off your rose tinted glasses and face reality. Guy didn't give two strawberry float about the ones close to him if he did he would have seeked help. You all feel sorry for him because he was your hero or whatever when you were younger but it doesn't change the fact that he took the easy way out. A lot people battle depression and suicide does cross their minds but the love for their loved ones and the fact how it will change their lives for good if they did kill themselves usually stops them from pulling the trigger or in this Case kicking the chair.

I can’t reply with what I actually want to say (as I would get banned) but you really have no idea what you are talking about do you? You are either the most ignorant piece of work that I have ever met on the internet (and that really is going some) or you are just simply a piss poor troll. It really is hard to tell.

Ok:

1) I quite clearly mentioned that I don't follow football. I have no connection to this guy at all, I just happened to be listening when the news broke. It was the reactions of his peers that got to me.

2) When I said "I use this word in its purest of meanings" I meant ignorant in that you literally do not have any knowledge of the situation or, I assume, the general idea of being so desperate that suicide becomes a viable option. I personally would not be comfortable making the huge sweeping statements you have been making considering our collective ignorance.

3) I don't think you understand how depression works.

Owing to a huge hangover, and then hosting a dinner party, I didn't have the TV on at all yesterday and had therefore missed this news entirely until this morning.

I just don't know what to say. He was just such a good guy - when so many of his fellow players have done so much to make themselves and the game seem like it's over-run with arseholes, he was a constant reminder that football produced some genuinely decent and universally liked individuals.

Just can't even imagine what must have been going on with him to make someone who was outwardly so successful and happy do this.

Ok, I had this huge post written out before the thread was locked and then when I hit submit I was dismayed to find out it was locked.

So, I'll try again. I am the same age as Gary, I also have two kids. So I try and put myself in his shoes. And I can't see any situation that would drive me to do what he did. This wasn't any selfish "Look at me" cry for help. This was the final act of a man standing alone at the edge of darkness. No one can tell what he was thinking, because the people who do end up the same way.

He must have been in a desperate place and I don't want to think about what could possibly drive a man to this outcome.
