So there is some controversy over the new Wimbeldon manager Wally Downes. He tweeted, when homosexuality became legal in India, "Oh yippee... Gay Sex is now legal in India!!! I'm on my way next week.. 1.4 billion all in... so 700million fellas!!! And me being the first Gay Icon for LGBGT footballing community...I'm going to be swamped!! #RainbowLacesTurbans". Now people are accusing him of homophobe because of this tweet and personally I don't understand it. It just seems like a fairly lame attempt at comedy. Do people think this comment is homophobic?

It’s not offensive, it’s just odd

It's in poor taste, it's inappropriate of a public figure, and it's surely disappointing. If it didn't specifically mention the Rainbow Laces campaign, a campaign that's specifically there to combat homophobia in sports, I would pass it off as just a bad joke, but this seems to be targeting the LGBT community and making fun of a sincere attempt to fix a serious problem. He was right to apologise for this tweet.

This is disgraceful, Disney should sack him and cancel GOTG3.

As the fellow Wimbledon fan on the forum, I have more of a problem with it.

Our club have a great history of LGBT inclusion, and were one of the first professional clubs in the UK to champion LGBT supporters groups.

Wally is associated with very old school football attitudes, which 'jokes' like this just reinforce. Whilst there's nothing explicitly unforgivable about that tweet in isolation, I think it is indicative that Wally as a leader raises cause for concern.

We are a club with a fierce sense of our history because of what we've been through, and I (among many supporters) would have quite liked to see an appointment that took us a step away from our ongoing attachment to Wimbledon's old guard.

Wally's appointment is perhaps indicative that the club is willing to overlook major causes for concern, purely because of rose tinted glasses and a romantic attachment to our history. If we are that shallow, then frankly we deserve all the criticism we've received.

I am sure that the Nerdfighteria/John Green part of our sponsorship/support base would withdraw support if there was any indication whatsoever that the club were willing to accommodate further comments of this nature.
