The Updates:

Project Update #2: Update #2: New Goodies!
Posted by Double Fine and 2 Player Productions

Ahoy, Backers of Adventure! And potential Backers of Adventure! And Haters of Adventure who come here whenever they feel like gnashing their teeth and seething with rage!

To the first group, we’d like to say THANK YOU again for the incredible support you've given this project. You’ve changed the way we are thinking about it, and you’ve changed the way EVERYBODY is thinking about a lot of things.

To say thanks to the first group, to entice the second group to join the first group, and to confound and annoy the third group, we are now offering these NEW REWARDS!

The Digital Soundtrack of the Documentary ($30 reward tier) Listen to the awesome game soundtrack at the same time as the awesome documentary soundtrack! I don’t know if that makes sense, or if it’s even medically advisable, but at least this way you have the option!

Special edition box containing both the game disc and a DVD/Blu-Ray of the documentary ($100 reward tier) Perhaps you’re not hip to this digital download craze. Or maybe you just like really nice boxes to put on your mantel so that your guests might linger and admire them while you pour another scotch. Either way, this is gonna be suuuper rad.

The Double Fine Adventure Book ($60 reward tier for a digital PDF, $500 reward tier for a physical copy) WTF? ART? In your MFing HANDS? Whoa Nellie, this is an exciting new development! Filled with concept art, developer bios, excerpts from the game’s script, and deep dark secrets, this book will further expand on this entire adventure. It will be made available both as a super nice, mantel-ready hardcover book in the $500 reward tier, and as a digital PDF in the $60 reward tier for people who just want to read it on the crapper with their iPads. (By the way, never ask to borrow my iPad.)

SO MANY NEW REWARDS!!!! To memorialize this momentous occasion, we’ve got a special treat for you. About a month before we launched the Kickstarter we filmed a 35 minute conversation in which Tim and Ron discussed what adventure games are, what it is like to make them, and what different forms they’ve taken over the years. It’s like watching Bill Moyers talking to Joseph Campbell, but if those guys were cool. We’ve embedded a 5 minute clip of that conversation below, but you can see the full version here.

This project has really grown into something much larger than we were expecting, which is-scientifically speaking-awesome. Many of you have been asking if this means we’ll be taking a bit more time with the production, and the answer is yes. This is not a cute, quick little game anymore. This is the real deal. This is a capital-G Game. This means that some rewards might show up a bit later than originally intended but fear not, it’s all to make sure we provide you with something that is worthy of the love bomb you detonated over Double Fine. Kaaaaa-blooooxoxoxxoxoxoxoxoxo!

That’s the sound a love bomb makes.

THANKS AGAIN AND WE’LL BE TALKING MORE SOON!!!

Here's the full video:

Go there and watch the video. It's very funny.

Basically, $15 gets you:

The finished game in all of its awesome glory on Steam, exclusive access to the PC Beta on Steam, access to the video series, and access the private discussion community.

Then there's tiers above that. One of them being lunch with Ron Gilbert and Tim Schafer, which some maniac has paid >$10,000 for.

Is this legit, or is this someone taking advantage of the recent twitter shenannagins between notch and doublefine?

edit: Seems legit, TimofLegend mentioned it on his Twitter feed.

It's legit. Pledged $30 myself. But I am worried about what happens if a large number of people who donate end up unhappy with the final product? It could kill this idea from ever happening again.

And this would be different from traditional game publishing how?

Well, you wouldn't have developers seeking out donations to make games again if people kick off.

Considering the talent involved I don't think it will (be crap). I love this funding model. :D

I'd love it in the future if your donation equated to 'shares' in the game, if the game turned a profit then you get royalties.

One failure isn't going to kill the model dead.

That's a step too far, I think. It's the same kind of greed that kills traditional business models. For what should you be given royalties? Because you ponied up some dough?
I don't think so, Tim.

(Doubly so because this game is essentially front loading it's profit - a large number of the potential buyers for the title will already have paid for, and won't then be going on to buy the game).

As it is, this model simply allows popular demand to fund a game. Freedom from the tyranny of publishers who fund only games that will turn a guaranteed, large profit. I think that's plenty to be getting on with.

This will probably turn a relatively modest profit by the standards of large publishers, but Double-fine gets to make the game they want to make, and we get to play it. That's win-win in my estimation.

It's already the 6th best-funded Kickstarter of all time, and it's only been open about 12 hours

That's exactly how things work at the moment  In fact often publishers are the only ones to turn a profit. If you could treat game development like an investment then we can remove the tyrannical publishers and allow people, perhaps rich people to give money directly to the development studio.

Exactly my point. Look at the state the industry is in. Very few niche titles, and everything is getting turned into first person shooters.

With this alternative source of funding, we get more of the offbeat stuff.

Yep, the model is different here as the developers have no one to please. Which for me is a bit dangerous. There needs to be some guidelines in place for the large amount of money that is in effect being invested to the game's development(but no returns on investment, so it isn't really investment from those paying up but it is for the studio, if that makes sense?).

I think common sense works wonders here. Double-Fine have tremendous cachet, which is why they've made so much money so easily.

I, for example, would be lucky to get 23 pence and a packet of fruit-pastilles out of a kickstarter.

Bear in mind, if the developers don't please their kickstarters, they'll have more difficulty trying to fund a game this way in future.

It's going up unbelievably fast  over $50K since I invested. This would be a great way to fund sequels

I'd like that too but it'd only work if shares were given to very early investors (say first 1000) on top of buying the game, ie if they invest $50 then $20 goes towards their copy of the game and they also get $30 in shares.

There are even more tiers on their website:

"Pledge $30,000 or more:
Picture of Ron Gilbert smiling.

Pledge $35,000 or more:
Undoctored picture of Ron Gilbert smiling."
