All FTP games are exploitative trash. How dare you invoke the great, holy name of Destiny in the same breath as this Dungeon Keeper Mobile-alike!

Well, actually...

Warframe is FTP done right. It's continued existence and growth since 2012 is testament to that, as are it's estimated 36 million players. But first:

What is Warframe?

Warframe is a Free to Play third person loot-based action game. Launched in 2012 as a corridor shooter, it has evolved over the intervening years into something almost entirely unique: a vast sci-fi shooter with fluid, parkour style movement, open world elements, space combat, trading, crafting, faction systems, plenty of lore, community events, and an ever growing and friendly player base.

You play as a Tenno, an ancient space-ninja in a solar system at war. The decaying clone armies of the Grineer face off against the techno-cultist Corpus and the festering spread of the Infected for control of the system. You must carve a path through these foes in conjunction with your fellow Tenno, and more allies besides.

Does that look typically FTP to you?

Ok fine, it's a little larger than most FTP games. But what's the hook?

It's essentially a full, AAA game...for free. The familiar tropes of FTP games are present, real-time countdowns, rapid advancement through premium currency, but are downplayed to the point that most casual players can almost completely ignore them.

It's also just an utterly unique experience. From humble beginnings as a simple shooter, the devs have whacked on so many modules and upgrades and features than the whole thing feels unlike any other game. This, compared with the visual distinctness of its art-style and the slickness of its core gameplay loop makes for one of the most interesting games out there today.

But my mate who loves Destiny and also completely coincidentally all Michael Bay films told me it was super hard to get into?

And your mate would be wrong. On all counts.

It's a little intimidating to start, especially as the tutorials are basically non-existent, but lucky for us there are a whole bunch of YouTube series out there explaining the basics. This was the one I used:

Yes clans! In fact, this is the main reason I made this thread!

Look, I fully expect this topic to sink like a stone, especially as I've timed it perfectly to allign with Destiny 2 actually becoming, you know, good. But I've reached the point in the game where joining a clan is extremely helpful for farming resources and blueprints. And it's a co-op game! They even have raid-like activities in the late game and super hard multi-person farming locations to do. You know. The good stuff. And sure I could join a faceless monster clan full of hundreds or thousands of members, but I thought...



So. If anyone wants to dive in and join me, let me know! I am, of course, Tafdolphin in game if you want to add me up there instead!

Yeah, I've a load of friends who say the same...which is a shame. I've no desire whatsoever to play D2 after all Bungie's scalping and backtracking, no matter how good the expansion is. Digital Extremes' attitude towards in-app purchases is far more lenient than Bungie's and Destiny is a paid game.

Might be worth mentioning that this is also on Xbone/PS4, it was PC only for a long time.

No I never figured out how

The series I linked above went into it a bit: you basically have to go through the forums and Discord and attempt to find a clan that looks like it suits you.

This then gives you access to that Clan's Research pool, which includes high level key blueprints that gives you access to high level stuff.

This is also coming to Switch right? Panic Button porting?

I've been playing this since the early beta days on PC and have currently maxxed everything out except for the new Prime content that dropped a couple of hours ago. You do have to spend some money to make the most out of it but you often get 50-75% off premium currency vouchers when you login to the game each day. The community itself is pretty good with many players just giving items away or offering to carry newer players through some of the harder content, myself included.

Quite looking forward to see how the Switch version turns out.

Warframe on Xbone will be one of the first games to trial mouse and keyboard support on the console.

I just put a request in with the Gilded Phoenix Alliance, the biggest clan in the game (and, by their numbers, the second biggest clan in any game behind EVE's goonswarm). I don't really want a personal experience at this point, just access to the trading post and research bank, so hopefully they'll give me the go-ahead and I'll have access to it all ASAP.

Also just finished my first frame: Frost. I have Oberon and Rhino ready to go, but I'm saving my final slot (for the time being) for Nova I think.

I'm in Crescent Moon Prime, previously part of the ICE Alliance but currently in the Gilded Phoenix Alliance. I'd imagine you'd be accepted into one of the clans quite quickly and it should open up a lot of the content when you are as it seems you're aware. When you have access to a trading post I could send you a bit of Platinum for another Warframe slot and a few essential mods if you like

It's a good choice going with Frost early on, he's useful in a wide variety of missions and quite tanky.

Aye, that's me on Steam and JamMasterJay in game. I often play with Zombitedesade who used to post here a few years ago so there are a few of us who can form squads for events or farming runs. Let me know when you have access to trade and I'll send you the stuff.

You should be good with Gilded Phoenix as they're full of old and new players alike and have various smaller clans depending on if you want casual or competitive play.

There have been some good Twitch Prime offers lately and the developers often have free loot giveaways in their weekly streams.

These two sites are pretty useful to have at hand too - they allow you to track updates, alerts, events and the day/night cycle on special tilesets.

So, the 'clan' I joined on the forum isn't actually a clan, it's just a private forum for Gilded Phoenix members. I now have to join a clan in-game, but I have no idea how to chose/where to go?

Rather misleading...

Anyone playing this on Switch? It seems amazing but very confusing. So much depth to it. I can’t believe it’s free!

Warfame does look neat, LF - I've watched quite a few vids and the game seems to be highly regarded. Even the paid content genuinely appears to be optional and not gouging. I did download it on my PS4 a while back and I think I'll take another look.

It's notoriously un-user friendly. Watch the vid I whacked in the first post for a good starter's guide. It's a genuinely great game, but you do have to get used to it.
