I'm assuming the different characters and their styles will be akin to how each character have always had a 'style' or 'gimmick' in previous games. Like one character would focus on rhythmic button presses or microgames that only used the D-pad in the first game, or different wiimote positions in Smooth moves, different stylus techniques in Touched, or different ways to rotate in Twisted, etc. It may be a little more complex in that you'll now need to account for where your character is on the screen now and that your actions are now limited based on where they are, but I'm sure they'll figure something out.
