Everyone with any interest already knows how the story turns out. So if this will be authentic to the books then there will be absolutely no new content.

Even mega HP fans will be hard pushed to follow a pay-to-view TV series for a decade that they already know all the outcomes for.

They're hoping it'll be a kid-friendly Game of Thrones. But with Game of Thrones, ASOIAF wasn't finished. And they never claimed they'd be completely faithful to the books. And there weren't already eight Game of Thrones movies telling the exact same story.

Shameless cash-in.

Yes it's a shameless cash-in.

In general I don't like the "it needs to be new" argument though, knowing the plot of something doesn't worsen it. There's no reason a faithful adapation of an existing story can't be good!

I imagine including the lengthy sub plot about Hermione trying to end slavery and everyone else laughing at her for being a busybody because the slaves like it actually, will really improve the pacing.

It'll go especially well if they stick with the Cursed Child canon and cast a black girl as Hermione.

It'll make a gooseberry fool load of money and be a massive success with fans obviously.

But yeah, creatively it does feel rather lazy at this point. Why not create a new fantasy IP from scratch? I know there's more risk involved since the HP name will guarantee its success, but these huge companies can afford to to take some risks surely?

I don't know I think it might be poorly received. Look at Amazon's Lord of the rings show that's kind of flopped. It's also going to be compared to the movies so it's perfectly possible WB will mess up the show..

The LoTR show is a bit different, it wasn't really based on any existing books/movies, it's mostly just made up by Amazon, which annoyed book purists. It also featured non-white actors which pissed off a lot of "anti-woke" dickheads.

I presume if the HBO Harry Potter series sticks to the books, then fans will be ok with it. And the racists will be appeased by Rowling's anti-trans views.

Doesn't matter what your IP is you have to have good writing and LOTR was terribly written by all accounts.

what

secondly

these books are for kids

the show will be for kids - which im reliably informed are a stock that are consistently being replenished - who dont have weird attachments to movies that came out 15 years ago or books that started 20 years ago

Think Tomous is talking about Rings of Power which was indeed a load of gooseberry fool.

No one can be surprised by this - another Media Franchise that can be turned over for years like Marvel, Star Wars

So what we are going to get is Harry Potter strung out into a season of maybe 12 episodes per book but with an idea taken from ZombieLand but instead of Zombie kill of the week its going to be Trans Smackdown of the week? I think I will pass on this one..

It's HBO, half of every episode will be a witch orgy.

Nerd parents always seem really desperate to make sure their kids like the same gooseberry fool they used to during their childhoods.

Good point from a Forbes article on this: https://www.forbes.com/sites/paultassi/2023/04/14/the-biggest-problem-with-hbo-maxs-harry-potter-tv-show/?sh=2b4c70e613dd

‘But doing not just a Harry Potter show, but a ten year-long Harry Potter show really, really commits to the idea that the books aren’t enough and the movies aren’t enough and people want to restart all this just ten years later and watch it run for another ten years after that. You just do not see this happen among other mega-franchises, and there is a good reason for that.

‘Why would this be a show anyone would talk about week to week? There are no twists, no surprises to be found for the vast majority of the audience. It will mostly be debates about what did or didn’t get changed from the movies, which is far less entertaining.’

Not really about JK but I really feel this show is being make because WB are really struggling at the moment. I think they're worried that the new DCU films won't work which is why they've kept the Batman going as it's own thing. Also why they pushed Matrix 4 to get made.

Amusement under late capitalism is the prolongation of work.
