Can also confirm that I've never been asked about GCSEs by my current or past employers. The only reason I ever needed them was to get into college as a requirement to study the course I studied.

Never went to pick up the certificates either.

I started DoE because the people who did it got to go snowboarding after doing their time and they sometimes got days off. It was pretty soon I found out the days off were to wipe old peoples arses and pick up litter and all that lame gooseberry fool so I told them to get strawberry floated.

I don't even remember, I probably cared a bit but knew I'd get kick ass grades anyway so wasn't so worried - Standard Grades (Scottish equivalent) were piss easy. Was more worried in my last year of school as I strawberry floated up my first year of highers through partying all the time so actually had to get decent grades to get into a good uni. Was fine though.

The D of E thing was really odd. The teachers spoke of it like it was what would separate you from the rest to get into top unis. They also basically said if you don't go to uni you will be homeless and worthless.

All DofE seemed to be was people walking across a field acting like dickheads.

Cared a bit, I was predicted something insane like 14 A*s and there was no hope of me ever getting that, cared a lot more when I properly strawberry floated up my AS Levels as that actually mattered quite a bit more.
Then by degree results I was back to not caring too much

My dad's doing that with my brother right now, telling the parents of his friends before he even gets a chance to tell said friends himself

The voluntary work stuff is pretty helpful but the rest of it is just playtime for teenagers

We always get calls from people needing their exam certificates for jobs.
We don't have them but that doesn't stop them calling.

I cared, mainly because I was expecting to do poorly, and I did. Having said that I took manly 'o' levels and not the GCSEs they hand out for free these days. An 'E' at 'o' level is equivalent to A* at GCSE.

I know you're joking but believe it or not referencing agencies still phone up schools to check GCSEs decades later if they have no certificates, I had to do it once for this guy in his 40s. I think it was because he had one job for something nuts like 20 years.

As for me, I just followed all the set work in class and did great coursework, I knew it was important and I tried my best but I've never really had an amazing work ethic, I just worked hard when I felt the pressure to do so. I did almost no revision but I did go to the voluntary study classes. I got excellent GCSEs not top end but mostly As, no Cs (I liked the idea of having no pass grades). I think English was probably the worst with those massive texts but I felt pretty great getting AA for that. Never liked maths but topped those papers, I remember telling this small man kid bully to strawberry float right off when I came out the exam, then I stole some of the school signage for some reason and went off to celebrate. It was mostly like that, all felt a bit surreal.

It got me into a decent college for A-levels that I then started strawberry floating up at, but I got enough UCAS points to get into the uni I wanted while doing BTEC that I didn't even finish.

What I learnt from all that was no matter how hard or bad things seem I will always find a way through eventually, and that mantra has got me through a lot of gooseberry fool.

I do think it's important kids experience some sense of expectation or risk before they leave compulsory education although I have a lot of criticism over the teaching and exam methods.

Never thought they would do that. Having done a levels and a degree since I've never had to prove my GCSE results.

I've never been asked to produce my certificates for any of my qualifications and I've never asked to see them for anyone I've taken on.

For interviews I've had to produce them but funnily enough only at the same university that awarded me the degree. So I guess they care.

When they say things like offer pending referencing HR department will just phone up the employer/institution to check or email, it takes ages but they continue to do it even after you've started work so it's possible to be fired because your references failed even after you've started work (probation). So it's never worth taking advantage of. They'll do this first before asking for certificates which is a last resort and some agencies/employers won't accept documents as evidence. Of course not everyone does this but I've done it for people like Dell, Oracle, G4S and I know Rolls Royce and Delloite do it.

I suspect that forensic chap off the interview stage of The Apprentice is the only person in Britain who actually checks this gooseberry fool.

I have never had to show any certificates but I know my company have asked new starters for certificates for GCSE, A Level and Degrees. I have no idea what they would do if somebody no longer had them (or had never bothered to pick them up ;) ).
