I'm going to order the book now and read it in time for the weekend when I'll see the film. :)

Great movie. Though slow burning at times. I've never heard of Watchmen before until I saw the trailer last year. Hexx told me to get the comic, which I did, and loved that too. (Cheers Hexx!)

It was basically frame for frame like the comic, which wasn't a bad thing. One or two things left out but looking forward to the directors cut on DVD to fill them in.

Is it wrong to like the movies end rather than the book? I mean the giant alien squid thing???

Rorschach rocked! 8-)

8/10

Just saw this. I knew nothing about the film or the graphic novels beforehand. :D

8.5/10, I knocked off half a point because the sound was strawberry floated in the cinema for most of the film :x Not the film's fault but I'm still angry.

I loved it :D It's a bit too long, but it needs to be that long to fit all the story in. Maybe it should have been two films, Kill Bill style.

Not even the love scene?

I don't understand the hatred of the love scene. In the graphic novel, Laurie practically throws herself on Dan in the first instance (which obviously didn't go so well for the poor guy) and afterward they get caught up in the moment after the fire, it was never meant as an intimate scene. It was all about fiery passion, which translates perfectly well to the screen.

Except, it's not firey passion. The only fire in the scene is used as a cheap allegory for ejaculation. It's gaudy, smutty and ridiculous. The scene in the novel leaves the actual act to the imagination, where it should be. The film makes it look like a super-hero porn film. As I mentioned before, pretty much the entire cinema was laughing all the way through it.

Films aren't meant to make you use your imagination, that's what books are for. Films are too shy about sex scenes these days, something like Watchmen shouldn't shy away from it when you see the rest of the story.

If sex is used in a meaningful, symbolic manner then I agree. But here it was presented as titillation, and badly shot titillation at that. It felt hugely out of place in an otherwise extremely competant film.

The sex scene here wasn't meant to be symbolic, it was meant to be an epic strawberry float caused by their exhilaration and the thrill of returning to their old ways - that and the whole costume thing mentioned in the book.
In a book/film about darkness and brutality, in a city full of depravity and perversion, why did you expect something soft and lovey-dovey? That's not how it was portrayed in the book, that's not how it should be portrayed in the film.

Oh and yes, Malin Akerman is epically hot.

People laughed at the sex scene (I thought the choice of music was funnier), but no one really noticed the gigantic wanking metaphor right at the end. :fp: Or laughed at it.

I didn't expect anything "lovey-dovey." I expected a well shot scene full of, yes, passion and unrestrained lust as in the book. What I got was "Who Washes the Watchmen, a Max Hardcore Production."

There is a grey area between the white of chastity and the black of smut and this is where I expected this scene to lie. Instead, me and the rest of the chortling cinema received graphic images of a chunky dude pounding a hot chick, something Watchmen, as a film and a novel, is above.

My thoughts on the film

I think had I not read the comic book before hand I would loved Watchmen. But cause I have it lost me from the get go. As soon as Veidt broke into Blake's apparently and it cut to a fight straight out of the Matrix I just sighed and thought this isn't how I imagined it at all. I was actually tempted to walk out even though I didn't.

It did win me back a bit afterwards as it looked so great. Night Owl was perfect and Rorschach was good not sure about the ending, where he was killed worked for me.

But in the end I think they ruined Dr Manhattan, for me the whole character was a god allegory which seemed far less profound and the character being able to see the future but ultimately trapped inside actions he can't change. Also the ending was ruined for me as I really wanted to see the monster in new york and Laurie's reaction to the carnage. There were loads of other small changes that ruined the film for me.

Although I did quite enjoy the film it was corroded for quite how much I love the comic.

Amusement under late capitalism is the prolongation of work.

Not entirely sure what I think about it. I enjoyed the large amounts of Manhattan cock, none of it lived up to the opening credits, the sex scene was strawberry floating awful, wanted the film to finish sooner but that might have been because of the large coke I drank during the film, Captain Exposition yapping on and on at the end got boring quickly, the violence was awesome, it was generally alright.

Need to see it again, definitely not wowed but it was better than I was expecting.

That's actually pretty common after your first exposure to Watchmen in any form. It's dense, it requires time to work through and think about.

edit: I assume, of course, that this IS your first exposure to it.

After his "misfire" earlier, the choice of "Hallelujah" was amazing.

I read the graphic novel years ago like every self-respecting geek. I love the book, I meant I wasn't sure what to think of the adaptation.
