PostWeekend Away in the UK
by Tragic Magic » Wed Sep 23, 2015 5:06 pm

Hi guys,

I know I'm being incredibly lazy but I'm about to do some Google searching and thought I may as well ask about at the same time. I'm looking to go away for three nights towards the end of October. Just my wife and I but I'm thinking of staying in the UK rather than going abroad. It's not really the best time for a seaside break so I'm thinking something more in the countryside with beautiful views and places to explore, like walking or somewhere with history to spend the day. We love the Peak District but we go there all the time and if we were to go abroad, I'd be thinking of Paris but we only just went there very recently. I know a lot of you guys are well traveled so I wondered if you wouldn't mind sharing some ideas for places that you've visited and could recommend?

Thanks

I can't help with anywhere in the UK sorry, maybe somewhere in the Scottish highlands if they're not too far? Meant to be beautiful. I've thought a few times about holidaying in Britain but always end up going abroad instead, seems to always work out cheaper. strawberry floating uk prices.

Wales is lovely. The Brecons/Snowdonia are both great.

Try Secret Escapes to get good deals on nice hotels. October will more than likely be wet and cold so a good hotel will probably make or break your stay.

Galway and/or Kerry over here, 2 of the nicest places on the planet scenery wise. Plus the pound to euro is favorable for you at mo.

Good to know Photek, at heart, still considers Ireland to be part of the UK. ;)

If it's countryside you're after, you can't go wrong with Wales -- it has some really lovely landscapes.

Cheers guys, just looking at New Forest National Park. Looks like it has some good walks and views. Rocsteady is dead right about UK prices but I just fancy driving down and chilling rather than catching flights. Just want to spend the days soaking up nature and grabbing a pint afterwards. I'll definitely give these places a look so thank you. Searching around I'm now hoping I can get somewhere self-catering and remote to stay, preferably with a hot tub to relax in during the chilly evenings.

Get yourself to the Lake District, in particular Ambleside. Such an amazingly gorgeous part of the country, and you can take a boat trip around Lake Windermere.

EDIT: If you're looking to self-cater, you can do a lot worse than Fisherground Lodges in Eskdale

Cotswolds? Lots of villages, countryside, can be lovely in the Autumn/Winter as well.

I can recommend an absolutely fantastic B+B in Wensleydale, Yorkshire Dales if you like. Just had our fifth visit in ten years. Landlady is a lovely lady, cannot do enough for you, will cook you an evening meal by arrangement and big log fire to finish whilst you relax in the lounge.
Another tip would be Whitby which is lovely out of season - some great restaurants there also. Again can recommend a great B+B if you wanted.
So many great places to visit in the UK, (also Ireland ;) )

I went recently and was surprised at how nice it was. Never been before despite it being close to where I grew up. Beautiful rolling hills, fun winding roads and adorable old villages. Only part that ruined it was coaches full of Japanese tourist taking up literally everything. I guess in these months it will be less crowded. 3 days would probably be a bit too long though. .

Whitby has crazy good fish and chips, that's my one abiding memory of the place. Well, that and the goths.

I love Whitby, particularly for the fish and chips. It's no Paignton, though.

Yeah it's lovely, one of my favourite parts of the country. Only downside about going in spring/summer is how crowded it gets. Tourists - as you say - everywhere. I went in the deep winter a few years back, loads of snow, and everywhere was deserted; it was bliss.

I definitely recommend New Forest. I've never done any tourist stuff there but drove through it a lot for work and it has some great views.

Come to Hastings, it has awesome fish and chips and has the best ice cream parlor in the UK http://www.courier.co.uk/East-Sussex-ic ... story.html

Also good pubs, a castle and cliff railways.

North Wales has some nice places - Abersoch in particular is a lovely little village.

If you do fancy somewhere further afield, go to Bruges! Bruges is fantastic.
