I'm struggling to explain a weird mobile phone incident and was hoping somebody here might know what was going on.
My mum and her cousin fell out a few years ago, lots of silly pettiness, her cousin is a little weird and turned quite racist around the time Brexit was all the rage.
Anyway, last week the cousin called my grandmother to ask if everything was ok. She was worried something had happened to her as she had a missed call from my mum on her phone and figured the only way my mum would have called her is if something serious had happened.
My mum is 100% certain that she didn't accidentally call her. There's nothing in her call log to show she had called her cousin.
The cousin showed my grandmother the phone and there is a missed call there from my mum. And the missed call shows my mum's phone number, not just her name, so the weird cousin hasn't just changed a number to show my mum's name.
I know that phone spoofing is a thing, but how can the above actually happen? It seems one hell of a coincidence that somebody has spoofed my mum's phone number and has then called her cousin!
Could one of the phones (either my mum or her cousin's) have been hacked?

Could someone have rung off your mum's phone then deleted the call record?
No, neither of them have ever changed their phone numbers so there wouldn't be two numbers associated.
The only people that ever have access to my mum's phone are my son and my nephew. Both like messing around on it. But the call was received by the cousin on a weekday when my mum was at work (with the phone).
This or one of many other apps / sites which you can use to call somebody, appearing to be from any number of your choice.
It's possible that your cousin used something like this to stir the pot.
That's interesting. She is a bit crazy and does like to stir things. But I'm not sure she's technically minded enough to know how to do something like that. She has an equally crazy daughter though, who also loves to cause trouble....

It's possible someone found both of their numbers in some database as well and spoofed the number to try and pretend to be the cousin/your mum in order to scam them.
Phones cannot be hacked in the way you mentioned so it's probably nothing to worry about.

Sounds most plausible to me. "Help I'm trapped abroad, pls send money" kind of thing.
