PostWe've had DiRT. Then GRID. Now say hello to FUEL...
by KK » Tue Aug 19, 2008 10:42 am

Eurogamer.net wrote:Codemasters has unveiled FUEL, a brand new openworld racing game promising the "largest racing environment to appear in gaming - ever".

Developed by French outfit Asobo Studios, the game's due out on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC in 2009.

Set in an "alternate present" where the world's been wrecked by the effects of climate change, FUEL claims a 5,000 square-mile playing area with "no boundaries" and 16-player racing.

Players race in "grungy home-tuned vehicles" across the "tsunami-wrecked pacific coast through the Nevada wastelands, including the Grand Canyon, up treacherous snow-capped mountains, thick forests, arid deserts, abandoned lakeside resorts and much more".

Along the way racers will encounter tornados, sandstorms, thunderstorms, lightning strikes and blizzards thanks to a dynamic weather system, and experience a full day-and-night cycle.

The ambitious-sounding game is going to be shown off for the first time at Games Convention in Leipzig this week.

Sounds somewhat intriguing, especially the weather system.

I hope that Codies sort the handling. It was the only less-than-stellar thing about GRID.

Phew - I thought this was their F1 title.

DIRT = McRae
GRID = TOCA
FUEL = Original? I take it that McRae games are scrapped then. :(

I think their F1 title is going to be called "PITS". Lets hope the game itself is anything but.

I know, still a rubbish title though, obviously.

FUEL suggests an arcadey nature, so I wouldn't go expecting anything more realistic than GRID.

Hmm I would have thought the sensible thing would have been to focus on the new F1 game. Can't say I want another open world racer.

Funny how Codies got the F1 licence right after they moved firmly into the arcade market.

Don't particularly like the sound of this, was their really any need in coming up with the background story and everything? Seems to me they could've just released it as an open-world racer, story/background really has no place in racing titles.

Which part of the name will not be capitalised this time? It's gone DiRT, GRiD, so presumable FuEL will be the next logical step?

Surely it would be FUEl, as the lower case letter moves along by one each time.

Sounds interesting, least theyre trying new things rather than chucking out the same thing every year with more cars and more tracks.

And I think it will be FUeL, just think it looks better than the others.

You're probably right there, MCN.

And I agree with BLH on the open world thing, I really don't like it when it's applied to straight racing series'. Sandbox games, fine, but not games I just want to get right to the action in.

At least they're not RPG titles that don't make any sense and sound stupid, like "Infinite Undiscovery."

Dirt you can associate with rally, grids and fuel with racing in general, but an infinite undiscovery? What the hell does it even mean?

That's a fair point, but the names of these games just reeks of laziness. They've just taken three words and tried (and failed) to make them 'hip' by putting one letter in lower case.

One big meh, based on the name. But interested in the way it plays, definitely. Sounds different.

I do not believe that for a second.
To put it into scale, The whole of Northen Ireland is 5,467 square miles.

There's no way they can produce a no-boundry play area that size.

5000 Sq miles would be terrible - too big in fact. And almost certainly mean Burnout levels of arcadeyness.

Brerlappins little hat wrote:meh. burnouts open world left me feeling pretty cold tbh. Call me old fashioned, but i need tracks, championships, and stuff like that in my racers. Not some massive open area for just ploughing around in, thats what GTA is for

The thing is, when I played the first Burnout games, I always imagined, "Why do they have those silly neon barriers.. they look so unrealistic and I wish I could roam around." Burnout Paradise sets up limitations in other ways so it seemed like a natural progression to the game for me. I mean real street races don't have tracks, do they...

This sounds good but I hope they pull it off with flair as it seems to be all the rage to make open worlds for everything these days, even if its not beneficial to gameplay. Freedom doesn't necessarily make a game more fun. Rules are results are what tern a toy into a game, which is why videogames succeed toys: they don't get boring so fast.

"It should be common sense to just accept the message Nintendo are sending out through their actions."

They only did that with DiRT. GRID was all in caps.
