I wasn't aware of its use as a verb before, but somehow I can't see 8 year olds coming up with the term "to impart piquancy or spirit to" the premise of knocking on someone's door .

It's 'knock-a-door run' and I refuse to accept any alternatives!

The term as a verb is also "to make lively" and who knows who came up with the term and how long ago, maybe it was when the word was used more commonly?

I'd only ever known it as an adjective, e.g. to do something gingerly, which is rather the opposite! Always good to learn something new...

The more I think about it, the more I'm coming round to 'Knicky Knocky Nine Doors'. I like that it sets a target – presumably you win by getting away with doing it nine times, after which you can go and celebrate with a Knickerbocker Glory or something.

Maybe the ginger is derived from the German word ginge meaning 'would go'?

Yep, that'll be where the UK kids in the 70s-90s got it from.

You can lock the thread now, we've cracked this.

Reading the wikipedia talk page because I wanted to see if there was any discussion over the etymology (the article states a rhyme as the origin but the source isn't particularly good) and of course what I actually find out from the talk page is that the US has a very racist version of the game :dread:

"I think it's important that this article be updated to reflect the racist name that I and other young racists used to call this game" :dread:

"N***** knocking" is not racist like it sounds. It's obviously a corruption of "Knick-a-knocking" (the British term), rather than having anything to do with African American people. 173.35.204.79 (talk) 06:40, 19 June 2009 (UTC)

What the strawberry float :fp:. I even had to add my own censorship to that.

You'd think "running away from strangers" would be encouraged in the post paedogeddon world.

Encouraging them to chase you probably shouldn't be encouraged though.

Third most popular vote is Jenuall is a Prick, so I guess plenty of people in the 70s to 90s could read the future and created a game around a certain person being an annoying twat. ;)

I'm too much of a good boy to have played this, so I've got no personal preference as to the name. Knock Door Run sounds the nicest, though.

Future civilization could have used time travel to warn about all kinds of disasters and acts of evil. Instead they chose to warn of Jenuall. Tells you all you need to know.

But they didn't warn about Lagamorph.

Proof that people in the future are dicks.

I'm surprised it's only the 3rd most popular to be fair!
