What do you want to see from the Nintendo Switch in 2019?

What do I want from the Switch in 2019?

- As many indies as possible to get a Switch release, it's completely taken that crown from the Vita and is the best way to play so many games.
- Add way more games, and not just NES, to the online sub. I'm reluctantly paying it at the moment so I can occasionally play Monster Hunter, and it is upsetting.

Right. I wanted to be able to sit down with this thread on my laptop and give a full answer. I've tried to keep them vaguely realistic, and I've not read through other's responses in detail I'm afraid. Here we go:


Games

- Metroid Prime 4 to come out next year, and to be more like MP1 than MP2 or (God forbid) MP3. Loneliness, selectable beams, varied environments, and more loneliness. If there must be the odd NPC, make them like Hollow Knight's - crucially, not fully voice-acted. Gandrayda anyone?

- Daemon x Machina to be chuffing brilliant. It looks like it could be. I just hope it is.

- No proper new Pokémon, not next year. Let's Go! will have just arrived, and I for one would like them to space out the Poké-offerings. I suspect they won't be able to resist the lure of money, but that's what I'd like.

- Smash season pass content fully out before year end. I won't insist on any specific characters, but I do want to see them all! Yes I'm greedy.

- No more Wii U ports apart from Tokyo Mirage Sessions. That one looked like a quirky fun JRPG that got away. From the others that people talk about often, SM3DW will look pathetic next to Odyssey, and The Wonderful 101 needs a sequel with a few of the kinks ironed out if anything. I think we've got enough to be honest.

- Paper Mario and the Thousand-Year Door HD is a bit pipe dream-y, but slightly more realistic than hoping that the main series goes back to that style.

- Yo-Kai Watch 4 announced for the West. It looks like a whole big leap up in quality over 3.

- Some more 3DS-style belters. I'm talking the sort of games recently seen more on the handhelds than Nintendo's home consoles, but with a slightly higher level of budget and polish. So - 2D Zelda, 2D Mario, AA7, a new Professor Layton... Any two of those, let's say.

- Finally, one more major Nintendo franchise goes BotW or Odyssey. By which I mean, large production-value-heavy 3D explore-a-thon. Could be Kirby, or Pit (free flight anybody?), or friggin' Ice Climber. Just let me point my character towards the horizon and charge off, collecting stuff on the way in an entertaining fashion. I don't mind if that's held back to 2020, and indeed it'd be greedy to insist on it in 2019: I just want to know it's coming.


Other Stuff

- No 'Switch Pro' or whatever. I don't mind if they want to release the 'Switch Pocket', a handheld-only budget offering. But I don't want them starting to release games that only run on the Pro, or are meant to run on both but actually only run like dogsh*t on the standard. Don't split the audience ta.

- A bit of Nintendo quirk on the main menu. Whether that be themes or tunes or Miis running around, I'm tired of it all feeling a bit sterile.

- Optional apps. I see why people want apps., but don't download them onto my Switch by default and clutter up the thing. I really do only use it for games.

- Online service adds SNES games at the very least. Really it's about time we had GameCube titles on VC. Given that, starting from the NES again was ridiculous.

- eShop gets a tune. And some easier formatting, I suppose, but primarily - tuuuuuuune please.

I like most points, but I hope to Christ I don't have to wait years to get another Pokemon, I have zero interested In Pokemon Yellow go!

With a pro or any other thing, the Only way I'd like a PRO version if it was much beefier and was just simply a home console. I have only taken my Switch out to NSW events and it has been used 3 times, portability is not a big thing, well, not really even a thing for me.

If Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee proves a hit I could certainly see them releasing a mainline game in 2019, then Let's Go Johto in 2020 with another mainline game in 2021. Personally I wouldn't be against a system like this as it means you still get a yearly Pokémon game and if you're only interested in one of them you just buy a game every two years.

That sort of model works, and several series have gone down that route. Pokémon being another to do so wouldn't really be a surprise. But then... it sort of already has been using that model with new game-optional remake-third version. That could easily be translated to new game-Let's Go-expanded version for the Switch.

Yeah if Let's Go doesn't work out then they can easily fall back on a third version/remake as you said. I would like a HD game in Johto at least though as that's probably still my favourite region.

I probably didn't word it in the best way possible but I know it's been confirmed for 2019, I kind of meant a release schedule like this,

2018: Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee
2019: New mainline Pokémon game
2020: Let's Go game (Johto region) if Let's Go does well, remake/third version if it doesn't
2021: New mainline Pokémon game

This way they can release a mainline game every other year giving the veteran players what they want and the other years they can try new things to mix it up and see what works/what doesn't without the pressure of it being a mainline game.

That is altogether too much Pokémon for me.

I think this would be a massive ‘stuff you’ to people who bought the original Switch, not just because of the price. It’d be like the New 3DS, where towards the end of its life development effort went into creating games that either couldn’t be played on the original, or could theoretically but in practice juddered all over the shop.

Now, that’s Nintendo, so we didn’t get too many of them. Imagine what third-party developers would do. They already struggle with the power of the Switch. They’d be straight onto making their software compatible only with the Switch Pro, either theoretically or straight out.

Fair enough if you don’t care for the portability (although Zelda on the bus...), but any game that’s developed for the Switch Pocket, you’d be able to play at home. Can’t say the same for the Switch Pro though.

By Switch Pocket do you mean a smaller version?

I'm looking at this from an entirely selfish view and a pro would for me, be cool to get more oomph and actually be able to play Zelda without it dropping to 0 frames at random times. A Pocket, if it was just the exact same thing, but smaller, for me, it's extremely pointless, I don't want a smaller screen or anything, the screen on the Switch now is too small, I also, I dunno, stopped enjoying handheld gaming during the DS. I have so many unplayed 3DS games as I simply don't like tiny consoles with tiny screens.

Does Breath of the Wild really have much issue with framerate now? I've only ever had it drop to zero when I've been paragliding from the top of a tower and it stopped to load something.

when the switch has a 55" screen it then won't be too small.

I haven't played it since release, but back when I did it would just randomly freeze up and everything. Shocking.

I had one drop to zero all game. I could deal with that. And I played a lot of handheld mode.

I guess you were lucky, a lot of people complained about getting drops to zero. I myself had a fair few. I think the worst area was the snowy mountain area. TBH, it was rather random.

Let’s Go and the mainline game? I think Let’s Go is very much a HD version of how the 3DS games look and people are hoping the mainline game will have a much more extensive graphical overhaul. This is Gamefreak though so who knows.

I'd like to be able to connect to my NAS and watch or read or listen to anything I have on there.

I know this is obviously never going to happen via anything that Nintendo do. I haven't looked into the Homebrew scene though so not sure what people are doing on that front.
