People have made some really good points (not that I agree with them all!) and I did want to respond to some but haven't got too much time today, but I have read everything.

Quelle surprise. Sometimes things aren't always rainbows and sunshine in the world of gaming.

I just read that article; it was both interesting and shocking. It can't really be described as being about gamer culture, though; the text references the internet rather than gaming platforms.

There certainly are toxic elements amongst people who play video games and the behaviours of such people should, of course, be challenged. I still don't believe that gaming itself encourages toxic behaviour; although, as an increasingly popular pastime, such unwanted behaviours can become more prevalent and need to be fought against. I don't feel that it's always doom and gloom in the world of gaming, though.

I love how these gaming fans grouped together to place a "thank you" advert opposite Hello Games offices (with additional community funding being handed to a children's hospital); and how Médecins Sans Frontières gained $2.1m from gaming fans viewing the Summer Games Done Quick event.

It can be so dispiriting to hear of people in the gaming world displaying horrible behaviours; and such actions should never be accepted or ignored. However, it's great to know that many folk conduct themselves in a far more positive way, too.

This is true. There was also GuardianCon recently where Destiny players raised hundreds of thousands for various charities.

I'm not sure this offsets the prevalence of abusive behaviour by various communities, but it's nice to hear about.

I think it's cuz meme culture and game culture are traditionally seen as the domain of young white males and have always been the domain of people who feel different, and by that fact it has allowed for far right thinking to seep into these things heavily
