PostWhat games define you?

What are the games that you think define you?

Obviously there are some games / series that are almost universally beloved, that most of us would profess to like - for example, I'd include Ocarina of Time, Read Dead Redemption, and Mario Odyssey among my all time top ten, but that's probably not very surprising. At the same time... none of those games are necessarily definitive of me as a gamer - but if I'd put thousands of hours into OoT, streamed it, written a guide on it, etc. then I'm sure I might think "yeah, everyone loves Ocarina, but it's my game". (Arguably OoT is more of a "definitive" game for jawa, if that makes sense!)

I hope this thread makes sense.

Personally I reckon my definitive games are:

Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon. Konami, just remake / rerelease it already. :x

Animal Crossing on Gamecube. The Switch version is indisputably the better game but I have fonder memories of the GC original, which was a highlight of a definitive era of gaming for me. Foregoing a summer outside IRL to collect furniture by completing random tasks for rude animals. :datass: Along with Wind Waker, which I defended robustly on the playground among peers - a doomed yet IMO noble pursuit.

The Banner Saga Trilogy. In more recent years, this is possibly the game I'd shout at people from the rooftops about. An absolutely wonderful experience that deserved universal acclaim, accolades, sales etc. And one that could be adequately enjoyed one-handed (don't No Context me :capnscotty: ) on mute while I held a sleeping newborn.

Championship Manager 00/01 & 01/02 were, respectively, a formative experience for me in PC gaming (and learning football stats), and a more recent joint experience of a community impressively maintained for decades. I'd also mention Ultimate Soccer Manager 98/99, which got there first, and had some truly incredible features (a bewildering anthemic song that played throughout on repeat; numerous glitches including a cyclical finance system where minus several million pounds was somehow higher than several million pounds, meaning you could offer a player a lucrative contract, then restart negotiations, and their agent would automatically submit a "higher" offer - thus bankrolling your club; and a feature where you could attempt to fix matches but would inevitably be rumbled and dismissed!) but appears to have sadly vanished into the ether.

Dragon Warrior Monsters, the secret best Game Boy game. Featuring a bug (at least in my copy) where you can't catch a monster you've already previously caught one of. Making obtaining all the monsters (through breeding) literally impossible.
Kickle Cubicle, the secret best NES game. Desperately needs re-releasing somewhere, somehow.
Wario Land 4, the secret best GBA game. With utterly incomprehensible musical "CDs" to unlock.

Finally I'll mention Poker Night 2, which I also loved. Shame there'll never be a sequel.

In hindsight maybe this thread is just "your favourite non-mainstream or non-AAA games".

So, what are yours?

Some that immediately spring to mind IMO...

OrangeRKN - Link's Awakening (obviously)
Tsunade - Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
Drumstick and Cora - not necessarily a single game, but I get the impression that they hold the GC era in the same reverential light as I do
I always associate site23 and Winckle with Deus Ex and Half Life, but maybe that's inaccurate
And Jezo loves Pokemon Sword and Shield, of course. ;)

I guess mine would have to be Smash. Though Hollow Knight is probably my favourite game. OoT might be a contender just cause I've played it so many times and know a lot about it generally.

lel I actually had a nice time with Sword and Shield. Probably give it a solid 5/10 tho.

Indeed. I spent a good 10 minutes trying to think of a better one but ultimately failed.

I do love MK8 Deluxe so much, mainly because of you lot though  Monday nights are always a joy now!

Animal Crossing New Leaf and New Horisons have taken up a huge chunk of my time, yet again because of playing with friends.

Breath of Fire 2 (SNES/GBA)
Lunar Knights (DS)
Deemo (NSW/Mobile)

I mean yeah, its my favourite game, loaded with nostalgia, I've replayed it many times in several forms throughout my life, my online persona derives in part from it, I have art and merchandise of it, I got in ONM for a forum project fan game based on it, the first "proper" game I made was a homage to it, and I'm currently making my first intended to be commercial game that is heavily inspired by it.

I think its ok

I genuinely have no idea? I mean I love Pokémon and that’s one series of a few series I can’t see myself not playing for the foreseeable. Does it define me though? No idea

It's a tricky question.

Of course there's the Ocarina Hyrule Field thing and maybe the Wii U as a whole... but I wouldn't say they define me. I think it can be just a moment in a game that creates a sense of definition; and for me that is things like:

> Racing my best pal neck-and-neck to the line in the motorbiking game Kikstart on the Commodore 64

> Reaching the end of a great journey after working out what to do and where to go in Fallout 3 on Xbox 360

> Being completely crap but making gradual improvement and finally getting over the line in first place in an online race with GR folk in Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U

> Scoring a winning goal right at the death of an online match in Pro Evo on PS4

> Seeing the credits pop up at the end of an amazing adventure in Mad Max on PS4

> Feeling as one with Trico in The Last Guardian on PS4

> Facing seemingly impossible bosses and then defeating them on stream in Dark Souls on PS4

> Really feeling the emotional context of situations whilst playing Night in the Woods on Switch

> The elation of - very slowly! - reaching level 25 in Final Fantasy XIV and being able to ride a mount

> Creating camp builds and gaining positive feedback from other creators in Fallout 76 on PS4

Looking back on those moments, you realise how incredible gaming can be.

Castlevania Symphony of the night - PlayStation - I can pick it up and play it now and still get a feeling of pure joy from it shows just how timeles it is.

The music is iconic, enemiy and castle design combine to create a beautiful world and each new screen brings a new feel and danger.

The fact that you can finish the game with only seeing about 30% of it is crazy. The amount of versatility with the weapons and then there is the speed running.

A game that ages beautifully and really feels like something that was made for super fans to lose themselves in.

Killer Instinct - Xbox One - taking the original which was such an important game to me and adding so much to it. The flow and the feel of power when you're going into an ultra combo.

Characters that have stood the test of time and unlike many other fights all look and feel very different. A game that will hopefully one day get a sequel.

Wish my image sig would work

Haha, I guess that one aspect of my character is a liking for "b" and even "c"-tier games ("jawa, you mean sh!t games!") . Sonic Boom, Pac-Man Ghostly Adventures, Balan Wonderland, Chocobo GP... bring 'em on!

Funnily enough, despite loving the game for a long time, I haven't played Pro Evo for a few years now. I can't bring myself to even try out eFootball. But, hey, I have terrific memories of the series.

Metroid Fusion I guess? It was the first of that genre I played I bought second hand on a whim in 2004, fell in love with the series (specifically 2D Metroid) and to this day will give a mediocre game a pass if it follows the metroidvania formula.

Tend to replay it once a year as well so it’s followed me about from adolescence to adulthood.

I actually remember that, i think it was based on some kind of board game.

Played a demo version on the ZX Spectrum which was included on a magazine cover tape.
