What are the games that you think define you?
Obviously there are some games / series that are almost universally beloved, that most of us would profess to like - for example, I'd include Ocarina of Time, Read Dead Redemption, and Mario Odyssey among my all time top ten, but that's probably not very surprising. At the same time... none of those games are necessarily definitive of me as a gamer - but if I'd put thousands of hours into OoT, streamed it, written a guide on it, etc. then I'm sure I might think "yeah, everyone loves
Ocarina, but it's
my game". (Arguably OoT is more of a "definitive" game for jawa, if that makes sense!)
I hope this thread makes sense.Personally I reckon my definitive games are:
Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon. Konami, just remake / rerelease it already.
Animal Crossing on Gamecube. The Switch version is indisputably the better game but I have fonder memories of the GC original, which was a highlight of a definitive era of gaming for me. Foregoing a summer outside IRL to collect furniture by completing random tasks for rude animals.
Along with
Wind Waker, which I defended robustly on the playground among peers - a doomed yet IMO noble pursuit.
The Banner Saga Trilogy. In more recent years, this is possibly the game I'd shout at people from the rooftops about. An absolutely wonderful experience that deserved universal acclaim, accolades, sales etc. And one that could be adequately enjoyed one-handed (don't No Context me
) on mute while I held a sleeping newborn.
Championship Manager 00/01 & 01/02 were, respectively, a formative experience for me in PC gaming (and learning football stats), and a more recent joint experience of a community impressively maintained for decades. I'd also mention
Ultimate Soccer Manager 98/99, which got there first, and had some truly incredible features (a bewildering anthemic song that played throughout on repeat; numerous glitches including a cyclical finance system where minus several million pounds was somehow higher than several million pounds, meaning you could offer a player a lucrative contract, then restart negotiations, and their agent would automatically submit a "higher" offer - thus bankrolling your club; and a feature where you could attempt to fix matches but would inevitably be rumbled and dismissed!) but appears to have sadly vanished into the ether.
Dragon Warrior Monsters, the secret best Game Boy game. Featuring a bug (at least in my copy) where you can't catch a monster you've already previously caught one of. Making obtaining all the monsters (through breeding) literally impossible.
Kickle Cubicle, the secret best NES game. Desperately needs re-releasing somewhere, somehow.
Wario Land 4, the secret best GBA game. With utterly incomprehensible musical "CDs" to unlock.
Finally I'll mention
Poker Night 2, which I also loved. Shame there'll never be a sequel.
In hindsight maybe this thread is just "your favourite non-mainstream or non-AAA games".So, what are yours?
Some that immediately spring to mind IMO...
OrangeRKN - Link's Awakening (obviously)
Tsunade - Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
Drumstick and Cora - not necessarily a single game, but I get the impression that they hold the GC era in the same reverential light as I do
I always associate site23 and Winckle with Deus Ex and Half Life, but maybe that's inaccurate
And Jezo loves Pokemon Sword and Shield, of course.
