After years of getting angry at online shooters, deciding to just stop playing them was a good decision.

I have genuinely no idea what you are referencing in Uncharted 2 and that's one of my favourite games  What was it/were the consequences?

I think I've very rarely ever gotten "angry" at a game, only annoyed or frustrated. Multiplayer would be the worst offender, and the actual "angry" times would probably be when coming up against someone straight-up cheating/hacking or deliberately throwing a game. Then again I've also had lots of fun coming up against hackers in games like GTA online

I think one of the event matches in Smash Bros Melee caused me to hurl the gamecube pad into the wall. Left a big dent. I was a fairly angry teenager anyway to be fair.

It's something I'd long forgotten, but I remember one of the old Football Manager games sending me into a moment of rage where I punched my laptop screen. Rage, quicky followed by considerable regret.

Time Trialling in F-Zero GX back in the day. I messed up the final corner of the final lap of Drift Highway and promptly launched my wavebird into the wall.

One man should not have this much power in this game. Luckily I'm not an ordinary man.

Skip to 6:25 for the bit I mean.

It's the moment the game went from being a dumb/fun Indiana Jones style romp, to a weird existential place that just didn't fit in. Never mind the fact that Nathan/the player literally have to kill all those people in game or just stop playing. It didn't ruin the game for me or anything, but it stood out as a weird moment for me. It felt like such an odd turn, going from a game that was basically just saying, "these are the bad guys, they are unambigously bad and here is a gun, go adventure!" to one that suddenly decides, "actually, they were human too, what's wrong with you?

Image

It's gone on to spawn a load of stupid navel gazing gooseberry fool from games that think they're super deep, by making the player question the morality of what they're doing, while giving them no systemic means to approach games in a different way, and just try to make you feel bad for playing them, I guess? Games that put you in a situation where you can either choose to do an objectively horrible thing, or just switch off.

Spec Ops is a game that often gets lumped in with this criticism, but that game handled it differently. It set out to be a send up of the gruff military shooter, and deliberately gives you wrong information about the people you are about to harm, so that when it pulled the rug out to call you a bad person, it was because it had deliberately misled you. You've done a bad thing, but you did it because it was framed as a good thing, until eventually you're doubting everything the game tells you.

But by and large, most games that tell you to press X to do a murder, then chastise you for doing the murder the game told you to do, are bullshit.

Didn't ND do basically the exact same thing in TLOU2?

The final boss of Uncharted 2 is so bad

I definitely don't read into it as much as you though, I don't think there was any intention to make the player think there or reflect on their actions (or to chastise them as you put it). It's just stereotypical Russian villain man doing the generic "are we so different" villain speech so Drake gets his "hero spares the villain" moment while the villain still gets his karmic comeuppance. Very genre in-keeping for action movies which is what Uncharted 2 channels so unapologetically as a game,

(And I don't think TLOU2 does it either! Player agency is not an element of TLOU2's story)

Don't think I've ever properly lost it with any game, I've certainly rage quit several times but usually I just become rather sweary when things become unfairly difficult.

I did once bite a controller hard enough to leave teeth marks in the plastic but I was only nine at the time.

But also, that's part of my point! If you've no agency, the game then trying to morally hand wring at you over your actions is even more pointless.

It's where games that attempt to be more cinematic in storytelling really struggle in trying to ape films too closely. It's easy to have a film where the protagonist does something terrible, where the choice is internal to the character, and you then watch them struggle with the guilt, but when a game tries the same thing, it basically has to force you to do the bad thing, and then all the attempts to make the player feel bad, or empathise with the characters guilt have all the impact taken out of them, because the decision was out of your hands.

I threw an Xbox 360 controller at a wall playing Trials and immediately regretted it. It didn't even smash satisfyingly, but it was strawberry floated.

I'm normally pretty chilled.

Body Harvest on the N64 deciding to freeze while I was walking towards the save point at the end of the level almost made me break a controller.

I'm half decent at Trials and find it strawberry floating infuriating on an existential level. Can't play it nowadays really.
