PostWhat is your ideal length for a Video Game?
by ITSMILNER » Tue Nov 23, 2021 10:34 pm

Games come in various length’s these days, majority of us on this forum are at ages now where we probably don’t have a ton of time to put into games like we used to. In your opinion, what is the ideal length for a game?

For me, the sweet spot is 10-15 hours, I can usually get games of that length completed over the course of a couple of weeks. Longer games I prefer to play on handheld as it’s easier to pick up for short blasts but chances are I won’t get to the end of something that’s over 40 hours (unless it really grabs me like Breath of the Wild) also, as I have limited time I prefer to play lots of different games rather than focus on one for months.

A few years ago I would have said as long as possible but these days with minimal gaming time that isn't spent on multiplayer shooters 5-10 hours is good.

Voted 20-30, but I'm very mindful that I like to take my time, see and do everything, so I generally spend more time on a game than the average player.

Case in point is Immortals Fenyx Rising. I am nearly 60 hours into my save and I'm only just accessing the fourth area of the six. I saw people in the game thread clocking it in about half of that time.

I love big, on-going openworld games that don't really end; things such as Fallout 76 and (even though I'm rubbish at them) Final Fantasy XIV and Elder Scrolls Online. I also enjoy large single-player adventures such as Fallout 3 and Mad Max. On this basis, I voted for the "40 hour+" option.

But... I do enjoy shorter games, too. I'd class games like Thomas Is Alone and Night In The Woods as being fantastic experiences.

I think a lot of developers/publishers feel that games need to be as big as possible, and so they're often drawn out to the detriment of the game. A lot of games don't need to be anywhere near as long as they are. It really depends on the game though.

For me personally, and the time I have to play games, 5-10 hours works best for me these days.

I actually find the prospect of a big, long videogame to be somewhat intimidating now. Knowing that I'm going to pour that many hours in is off putting, where it once might've been part of the appeal.

Then again though, 10-15 hours seems pretty short as well, though that depends on the type of game.

I don't know. I'm not sure yet.

Like Alvin said, big games are intimidating. You know walking into the first large location in a Bethesda game that you are going to have loads of stuff to do. Even if it's a great game, it can become a chore. I'd prefer a zap on a linear game like Mario or sonic sometimes.
The long-winded stuff has a place but as I've gotten older, I don't want to have to wade through a 1,000 hour rpg.

I would genuinely have voted for 30-40 if it was an option. :slol:

Depends on the content. If the game has enough going on to keep you engaged it doesn't matter.

For shorter games price is key, if it take 3 hours and costs 50 quid you are likely to be disappointed.

I think the answer to the question also depends greatly on the type of life you lead. If you have a family the number of hours on offer for gaming will be diminished. If you lead a very social life, same deal. If you are neither of these you've got all the time in the world outside of working.

Anything up to 20 hours is usually ideal for me, being the parent of a young terror who takes up a lot of my time. Anything more than that and it does tend to become a bit of a slog to get through.

As a result I think I'm done with big open world games. I really failed to get going on some of the biggest last generation-RDR2, HZD, Witcher 3

It's frustrating that the Venn diagram of games I love to play and games I don't have the time to play is a circle. Big fan of massive RPGs but I know they're a fool's errand as I'll never get close to finishing them.

I love a good, long game I can really dive into. As long as the story doesn't drag!

There is no ideal. I like ‘em short, I like ‘em long. Just at different times.

Quite a few hours to be fair that one has a damn good price per hour at this point :D

It really does vary, but I picked 10-15 on the basis of if I am enjoying (but not loving) a game, and see that the playtime is 20hr+ on HLTB, I will normally drop it as I know I am almost certainly going to before the end anyway.

I most recently did this with Mafia 3. Love the story, atmosphere and music, but it does not paly particularly well. When I see it's about 25 hours long I know there is no way I will make it to the credits.

This, although I don't tend to play many story driven games these days.
