My copy of Wave Race for the original Gameboy still had a working save file if memory serves me correctly (I last tried it a couple of years ago at my parent's house). That was most surprising, I thought the battery back-up would have died many years prior.

I would imagine it's the oldest save on my Dreamcast VMUs, most likely Soul Calibur, but could also be Sonic Adventure or Virtua Fighter 3TB.

This is a "Chip Shop", this one in particular is called the Copper Kettle.
I used to go to the chippy for the local computer shop owner and he had the same thing every day.
2 sausages, chicken and mushroom pie and chips.
He got me chips for going.

Happy days.

I still have all my N64 saves, at least the ones that save on the cart. A year ago I went back and made sure all the carts still work and any that had on cart saves were still there, had no issues at all. That would make Mario Kart 64 the oldest save probably, then Lylat Wars, after that Im not sure what the order would be. It was pretty great to fire up Mario 64 and see the original 120 star save still there waiting for me.

Edit: This has made me realise I should do the same for Gameboy games and see what has survivied on those carts.

 This makes sense now I guess, but this is the oddest chippy order I've ever seen. When you started listing the items with individual sausages - then added a pie - I presumed it was a butchers' or a supermarket shop or similar.

Probably something on an N64 cart. Let's say Shadows of the Empire

Probably Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins on GB. Quite possible the first game I bought for myself and my own console - seeing as hardly any Megadrive games had a save.

If there's anything else on Windows or DOS it definitely doesn't exist anymore.

I've certainly got PS2 memory cards in the house. I'd love to know what are in these! Somewhere (either at home or at my mum and dad's) there's a whole box of old Amiga disks with old save files on.

My oldest is probably on Ocarina of Time, can’t remember the exact year but probably 1999 or 2000, the first save slot never got deleted as far as I’m aware so it’s most likely that. If we could have multiple games on a cart for Pokémon it’d have definitely been Pokémon Red though, I played that through so many times as a kid though  I actually last loaded it up a couple of years back and my most recent save was still there!

Innit? But back then the full price titles were going for £7.95/ £8.95 or even a tenner. Some exceptions like The Artist (art package) were £14.95 so £1.99 for a game was great.
Some of them were amazing value for money.

I haven't kept any of my old consoles other than my GB Micro and ended up checking my ganes tonight with this in mind.

Looks like I deleted my Mario and Zelda saves so my oldest is Mario Kart Super Circuit which must be from 2001 or 2002?

Ive still got Wario Ware and Advance Wars saves. Theyre both great games but AW in particular is amazing. Trying it again for this has got me hooked all over again.

Mine is probably something on GBA like Rayman or Spyro that I never bothered replaying, or potentially Super Mario World which me and my brother had when we were little kids so if it has multiple files and as long as I never deleted the original one for a replay when I was older that's probably still there from 22 or so years ago.

OrangeRKN wrote:It's probably pokemon blue if the save is still there (can't remember if that relies on an internal battery like gold and silver?)

That or an N64 cart

I think it does, but for whatever reason (probably the in-game clock) the battery runs out far faster on the gen 2 games, last I checked my copies of Yellow and Red still keep their saves but my copy of Gold packed up sometime in my early-mid teens so at least ten years ago. (I remember when I first realised the saves were disappearing I just kept my GBA SP on charge 24/7 with the backlight turned off to avoid the save dying for a week or two, only to forget about it and turn it off at one point, turned it back on immediately and the save was still there so thought it was fixed and turned off again, then next time I booted up it was gone RIP)

Probably Pokémon silver if the battery hasn't died.

Though I do have a SNES in the loft so it's possible there's still an old working save on one of the carts.

Surely all the batteries in our N64 carts are dead by now?

According to this there are only 12 N64 carts that rely on a battery for saves: https://retrocomputing.stackexchange.co ... o-the-cart

1080 Snowboarding
F-Zero X
Harvest Moon 64
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Major League Baseball featuring Ken Griffey Jr.
Mario Golf
The New Tetris
Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber
Resident Evil 2
Super Smash Bros
WCW/NWO Revenge
WWF: Wrestlemania 2000

Recently I've only played Lylat Wars and Diddy Kong Racing so it makes sense they were fine.

My megadrive PGA golf still has saves on it that are accessible. Some of those shots were worldies.
All flukes.
