There is no god and the sooner religion is purged from the earth the better for everyone.

I'm not a religious person. Every single one of us doesn't believe in thousands of religions, and I don't see how other people who understand that thousands of religions are utter bollocks can then turn around and say to themselves that this one religion is real, and their chosen religion is typically very conveniently popular in the same part of the world and the same era of history they happened to be born into.

I've witnessed a variety of different religions being practiced in different parts of the world over the years, and none of them have stood out to me as being any more real than the rest, even though their believers are all as equally convinced that they're following the right one.

I think religions are basically made up answers for things humans don't understand, people seem to find comfort in that. Frankly, having lived all my life in NI I find a lot of religious people here to be largely deluded, ignorant, cherry-picking hypocrites, and I'm glad I've steered away from falling for any old religious nonsense.

I'm an atheist.

I don't hate religion or whatever. The power structures of organised religion are clearly very abusable, so that would be the part I'd say we should actively deconstruct. It seems to be happening so that's cool. Personal faith is obviously fine, and I am sure some individual churches/vicars are fine (but exist in a hierarchy that is itself bad). I also think it's important it's not taboo to challenge actively damaging stuff that some religious people believe, e.g. you shouldn't get a pass on homophobia because of your religion.

Weird occult stuff is objectively more fun than mainstream religion though, if I were going to have some kind of faith I'd much rather hang out with witches than churchy types.

I'm a christian, though not devout as i'm not a churchgoer nor do i read the bible, but i do have some faith.

During a visit to Bruges i visited the Basilica of the Holy Blood and had the opportunity to touch the relic/say a prayer, it was an incredibly powerful and positive spiritual experience which i shall never forget.

I'm an atheist, but I did try being a Christian when I was younger.

I went to church a lot as a kid, my nan used to pick me up (My parents weren't religious, but my grandparents were very religious growing up) and take me so I could play with my cousins after the service. My cousins were Christians from a very young age. I didn't understand any of it and began to listen to the sermons. One sermon I will always remember. It was why Christians were right and Muslims were wrong. It stopped me wanting to be a Christian when I was contemplating it just before I turned 15.

They had a youth camp every year held in Denbigh at a boarding school. Different churches from around the country sent kids from their churches for a week to do fun activities and go to meetings worshipping god. I went every year from the age of about 11 till i was about 17.

When I was 15 I met a guy called Mark. Just like me he just didn't "get" Christianity. The point if it, why so many people worshipped god, why they were so into it all and taken in by it. We both tried to understand it in our own ways but neither of us did in the end. I think we both realised we weren't going to believe any of it. We both continued to go to camp just to hang out because we were from different parts of the country. To this day we're both atheists.

Atheist. I was brought up Christian until I was 11 and then decided that I didn’t believe any of it so took my own path.

I suppose I'm atheist, although I fall more into the "I don't care" category more than the more traditional non-believer.

I take no issue with people having personal faiths but I see religious groups largely as recruitment/brainwashing for their pyramid type schemes.

Nobody should harrass or convince someone else to change their belief system, people should be free to make their own decisions for their own reasons.

To be fair it would be a piss poor religion that said “we are wrong and they are right”. ;)

If someone came up to you in the street and just told you to believe in a magical teapot that created all life in the universe without any evidence, you wouldn't believe them.

So why do religious people do just that but with their chosen deity? I don't get it. The only thing that I can think of is a fear of death. They nearly all offer solace in death.

I always think lumping in all the disparate aspects of Christianity(or Islam or Judaism or Hinduism) together under one bracket is a bit of a misnomer. In the West of Scotland, you have two sects of Christianity that actively fight each other on the street, in the court, on the terraces and so on - I'm sure they wouldn't thank you for making them pick the same option in a census or poll. :slol:

With that said, I'm agnostic, raised Catholic - went to Catholic school etc. Used to be pretty into it until I was about seventeen or eighteen, but some of the teachings that we were given are pretty horrible and I'm sorry I ever thought otherwise.

I’m an atheist.

I have no beef with people wanting a belief system, I can see why people would seek comfort in such things.

What I can’t stand is that religions like the Roman Catholic Church has insane money and doesn’t use it for good. I also take exception to them getting tax break etc. as if they are charities.

A very good point! Some of the worst violence in history has been committed by those who are broadly of the same religion but slightly different denominations.

That’s one of things that make no sense to me about religion. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of religions out there, what makes people so confident that they have picked the right one? And even if you did manage to pick the right one, what makes you so confident that your flavour of it is correct?

For example, you discount Hinduism, Islam and Sikhism and pick Christianity. Good news, you were correct, Jesus did exist and was the son of God. But unfortunately you ended up going to a Seventh Day Adventist Church and God really hates those guys. You should have picked the Ethiopian Orthodox Church as they were the only ones who managed to get everything correct!

And typically it isn't even a choice you actively make, it's decided for you by your parents and you're just born into this belief system that just so happens to be the right one. What luck!

I would say I was more agnostic than atheist and while I can appreciate the benefits faith and a sense of community give people of religion, I have a very cynical view of organised religion and while this doesn't apply to all of course, some can be extremely toxic.

What I do strongly believe is society should be run in a completely secular manner, and people's religious rights should be protected only up to the point where they don't infringe on the rights of others. On a semi related note, the Government should be doing more about these twats protesting outside schools against LGBT lessons.

Rightey has a point. Many people believe religion is saving your soul and that it's good to help save your fellow men. And some of the more obnoxious proselyters you'll meet - the missionaries - are mere 18 to 20 year olds, forced into being missionaries because of their family. Cut them some slack.
